Making hard decisions - Warninng! Drunken pointless rant.

Spoiler alert! I'm drunk and the below text is mostly a rant.

A lot is changing for me right now. I had a job lined up that paid me more money than I would know what to do with. Well the job got postponed indefinitely due to budget issues (damn economy.) So I've been making huge purchasing, thinking my salary was going to double and now it's not, at least for a while.

I am starting a consulting business and just put over $3000 into a new computer & peripherals, plus I need some new furniture and a filing cabinet... The list goes on and on.

So what can I do in the meantime before I get my business up and running? The only thing I can think of is selling some of the 20 or however many Busse & Kin blades I've bought over the last 6 months. The worst part is that if and when my business is successful, I would be able to afford all my beloved INFI & Kin blades, plus buy a bunch more. I would just hate to have to sell my blades now and have to try to replace them further down the line. I've grown attached to a lot of them, and they have sentimental value.

I love all of them!! I honestly can't decide which blades I could part with. I think I'd want to start with some of the new blades I've purchased, but they are still for sale and I'd hate to lose money when I need it so much to fund my business and stay afloat.

So how would you decide what blades you would sell if you had to? Would you sell your priciest ones, even though they're your favorites? Would you sell some for a loss?

My situation is truly tragic; and I can't stand the thought of parting with any of my beloved blades.

What to do, what to do?

(Excuse the rant, I'm just at a loss on what to do. To top it off, I'm going through a rough breakup, so don't mind me.)

ive had to sell alot of my busse's recently also due to the economy and my job situation.i sold the ones i thought i could get the most for at this time and ones that were redundant.i dont really have attachment to many of mine so it was kinda easy.but i do have a few i cant bring myself to sell.look at the exchange see whats selling and sell those first.most likely you will be able to by the same ones later when you are doing better.good luck!!

A job transfer to another State yielded a house sale that took 12 months to complete back in '07. Deep into five figures in steel, I realized that some aggressive sales would bring me in on the new house under PMI.

Sell, I did.

I gave the users the highest priority to keep then started at the bottom of the list and moved my way up selling. Today I still have a nice collection of users, a handful of backups and a few sentimental pieces. Regrets? None.

Put them all up for sale with the exception of one, whatever you are left with when you meet your monetary needs is what you keep.

I totally feel your pain Bro!!! Having had 5 surgeries in the last 27 months I have bought and sold alot. I lost my shirt on the stuff I sold but I did what I had to do at the time. I look back and say "I Wish", but you know I think it's more fun wondering what's around the corner. I quit looking back and ONLY look ahead now;)!!!

I would sell the blades that you are least attached to. Keep the ones you use even/especially if they are the cheapest [least valuable]

I would also say not to sell for a loss, but if you need the money then it is what it is. Also these are Busses we are talking about, selling for a loss is selling at MSRP and losing shipping, you arent taking a 50% loss.

Listen to paddling man, I've seen [some] of his collection of users and he definately chose the right ones to keep  I'm sure you know which ones you want to keep over others too.

This. ^^^ Choose a few that are most valuable to you. This doesn't mean monetary value necessarily, but the ones that you enjoy the most. Rank the remaining knives in priority and prepare to sell them until you can stop.

I feel for ya, man... I'm a Busse hoarder, and someday I too will have to start thinning the collection. That day will suck large. However, I do know what I'd hold on to. My Bussekin #27's as they are all destined for use eventually along with a few other users like GW's & AD's as well as my 2 LMS's, an Easton satin smooth bolt set, and my snakeskin Busse's along with a handful of variants and MO's, a couple of Rats and a Dog or 2. Another select group of hard to reacquire knives would be held to sell last in hopes of not having to, and everything else would go on the block.

When that day comes, the Trough will be very full, my friend...and this HOG will be shedding many tears.

Thanks for all the advice. I think I'll sell a few. My financial situation isn't awful, but I hate not having much in savings/invested and there are so many new releases coming down the road that I want, but the costs of starting my own business & finishing my dual masters is my priority now. Hopefully I'll be able to do it all. Jje

You can buy the "models" you love when things improve. I've learned this with various items over the years. Tangible assets are usually available for purchase well after the mania has passed... hang in there.

I ll take a nice Busse off your hands and if you turn things around I promise Id sell it back to you!! PM me if interested!!

Sell the easiest to replace, keep the "most" difficult to replace. Sell what can yield the most money to keep you from having to sell more knives. Sentimental only carries a knife so far, if it is easy to replace...toss it, they are just knives. With the exception of the "Wounded" Badger, not much sentiment could be given....by me to a knife.

Keep your true user!!! I like to use many of mine, but only 2 are "my" users. I could let go most any...and have.....I actually did sell my user under the term that I get first crack at it, should the seller ever sell it.

Do what you need to, to get you where you need to be...and once there, reaccumulate Busse's like never before.

But all I know is I know nothing........

Sorry to hear that Flux but I am sure better times will come.

I would keep one large, one medium and one small infi blades (the ones I like the most of course). I would sell the rest; there will be always oportunities to get new blades in the future.

Best luck for you....

I agree with PM, Jaxx and Gravelface, mostly but with everyone else to to some extent. I would say that you stipulate being able to repurchase the ones you flip either when you can or when they put them up. I would even go so far as to make three lists, One: the ones you are least attached to; these go first. Two: Borderline; If you still need $ after you have depleted the first. Three: Doomsday; these are the blades that someone will have to pry from your krispy fingers. In all honesty, do any of us need more than a few "indestructible" blades? Take care of business first, then you can work on your "collection."

I took a sheet of paper and made 3 columns, keep, sell, and maybe. then added 2 more for probably and probably not. once I saw them all together at once on 1 sheet of paper, it was a lot easier to admit to myself I had several times more than I could ever need. before a few weeks ago id sold 1 ever. then in the last month I've sold 20+, only missed 1, so I just bought another. you wont miss them nearly as much as you think you will if you still have your favorites.

Each post I read I was going to quote. Great advice HOGs. I think I'll keep at the very least 6 blades: 2 small; 2 medium; 2 big. That way I have all my bases covered for me and my best mate.

Thanks for all the advice!

do not sweat the small stuff man,
