Could some of you guys provide who you use for your heat treating services? I am in the midst of the "Suppliers List" and I am in this section now.

One other thing. Most treaters can heat treat the stainless steels (440C, ATS34, etc) but who out there will do L6, 0-1 and some of the simple steels?

C Wilkins

rob simonich! he's the best, you'll never have a problem with your blades if you send them to him, i haven't had one yet.

I do my own heat treating. I have heat treated 440C but don't use it anymore as I like the simple carbon steels better as I like to do Japanese style heat treating and it does better using steels like 1084 (I have used W2 also, but it is to unreliable in carbon content). I have not contracted to do any heat treating yet but am in the process of getting a high and low temp salt bath so I can control my processes with more exactness and then will probably start. I will not do any stainless steels though as I don't like them (they don't work well for the style of blades I make). If you are interested in my work here is the URL: http://home.airswitch.net/cbenson/custom.htm
Hope this helps,
Ravenclaw

Mr. Wilkins, I would like to say thank you for putting these lists together, I appreciate you efforts.

Thanks for all the time you're putting into these lists. I know what my wife goes through when she tries to find someone for me.
I do my own heat treating and cryo. Ocassionally I have done it for other makers as well.
I also hear very good things about Texas Knifemaker's Supply and Rob Simonich.

When you get all the lists made will you be posting them or sending them via e-mail to anyone who asks for it?

I have Texas Knifemaker's Supply, K&G, and Rob Simonich.

I need information on Paul Bos and his contact information.

Any information on who is able to heat treat carbon steels would be greatly appreciated.

C Wilkins

Yes I do carbon steels Up to 24 Inches I allso make damascas Inculding Moasiac I have been making knives for 17 years on board of derectors montana knife makers listed in the anual knives 2000 most of the makers know who i am thanks e mail GMW knives@aol.comm

Well, I guess I can't let this pass without mentioning Paul Bos. I used to do my own heat treating. Even doing the best I could, I couldn't touch the quality of his steel. He's done ATS-34, A2 and CPM-3V for me. Our friends at OSHA make oil quenched steels just not worth the bother for him.

Paul Bos is great in my opinion for all stainless. He doesnt do straight carbon now because of California EPA crackdown on his salts and oil quench. Paul Bos 1900 Weld Blvd. El Cajon Cal. 92020 (619)562-2370
He reccomends Howard Morgan for all the carbon steel now: Morgon Valley Forge 115 35th Place Runnells, IA. 50237 howard@mvforge.com Hope this helps the list. Bruce Bump

Here is the heat treating list so far, if you know of any others, please post it or email me.

Thanks,
C Wilkins

Just for the record, the owner/operator of Morgan Valley Forge is Howard Clark, not Howard Morgan. Howard is an extremely knowlegeable master bladesmith/swordsmith. I'm not bringing this up to be some kind of a wise guy -- just want your list to accurate. Good job!

Thanks for doing the list Mr. C. L. Wilkins. I am sure it will be well used (I have added it to my notes as well)!!!
