Made an escape on Monday with the family--what turns out to have been the last FALL outing for the year. That night, the cold started blowing in (quite literally) and the temperature fell 20 degrees in an hour. But all this happened before that, as the temperatures were climbing toward about 70 by later in the day.
We went to a favorite spot nearby (Perry Lake), but opted to hike a section of trail that was new to us. It is part of a loop that is about 30 miles long, with numerous camping areas along the way and backpacking opportunities for those so inclined and without the limitations of the abbreviated legs of little people.
Here's part of the crew, ramped up on clean air and possibility.
I hate pictures of me, but here's a shot of my youngest--a boy--who loves the outdoors as much as anyone else in the family, and he's not even six months yet. [This picture included to boost Fiddleback content

I'm lousy at remembering to take pictures, but here are a couple things my kids thought we needed pictures of: a tree absorbing another tree, some striking leaves, and the evidence of an OCD woodpecker.
Some more knife content....
And here was the turnaround point in the hike. My olderst--the leader--stops abruptly and yells "RATTLESNAKE!!!" A quick step towards her and I saw this piece of nature, sunning itself on the dark earth of the path. Dumb dog ran right overtop of it getting back to us, but was apparently saved by its sluggish demeanor due to the cool of the morning. The Frau was unwilling to proceed any further, so we headed back early.
The enitre way back, my oldest kept talking about it. And even this morning, she ran up to some stranger in the store to tell them about how she "saved the lives of her entire family" from a rattlesnake. I'm proud of her sharp eyes and quick response, and even the Frau admitted that she was impressed at how woods-wise our girl is becoming. Apparently all that work is slowly paying off.
Sorry that all pictures are quick shots with the camera-phone. I need to get a good camera again.
