Making Hisss-tory

Made an escape on Monday with the family--what turns out to have been the last FALL outing for the year. That night, the cold started blowing in (quite literally) and the temperature fell 20 degrees in an hour. But all this happened before that, as the temperatures were climbing toward about 70 by later in the day.

We went to a favorite spot nearby (Perry Lake), but opted to hike a section of trail that was new to us. It is part of a loop that is about 30 miles long, with numerous camping areas along the way and backpacking opportunities for those so inclined and without the limitations of the abbreviated legs of little people.

Here's part of the crew, ramped up on clean air and possibility.

I hate pictures of me, but here's a shot of my youngest--a boy--who loves the outdoors as much as anyone else in the family, and he's not even six months yet. [This picture included to boost Fiddleback content ;)]

I'm lousy at remembering to take pictures, but here are a couple things my kids thought we needed pictures of: a tree absorbing another tree, some striking leaves, and the evidence of an OCD woodpecker.

And here was the turnaround point in the hike. My olderst--the leader--stops abruptly and yells "RATTLESNAKE!!!" A quick step towards her and I saw this piece of nature, sunning itself on the dark earth of the path. Dumb dog ran right overtop of it getting back to us, but was apparently saved by its sluggish demeanor due to the cool of the morning. The Frau was unwilling to proceed any further, so we headed back early.

The enitre way back, my oldest kept talking about it. And even this morning, she ran up to some stranger in the store to tell them about how she "saved the lives of her entire family" from a rattlesnake. I'm proud of her sharp eyes and quick response, and even the Frau admitted that she was impressed at how woods-wise our girl is becoming. Apparently all that work is slowly paying off.

Sorry that all pictures are quick shots with the camera-phone. I need to get a good camera again.

Yo mike, first off, epic trip. Epic pics. Keep it up! On the rattler, last week my friend found one on his porch out by St. Louis. In Sedalia, no signs of them devils. Ran across a few copperheads the last couple years.

Great looking family, outdoors, beautiful snake - sounds like a good day to me.

Always enjoy seeing that BC, I really like that configuration with the tapered tang. Looks like it's been getting a good workout with you.

OCD woodpecker - what a perfect description. Great story and pics Michael. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks, everyone. It was a really great day, and a grand adventure for the girls. It was the first time the rest of the family had encountered a rattlesnake in the wild (hence the "hisss-tory"), which is sure to make it a memorable trip.

Thanks for the knife compliments too. I feel so lucky to have this BC, and remember you all quite fondly when I use it. There will be other Fiddlebacks, bit I can't see this one ever going somewhere. It really feels like the perfection of the model to me, though I suspect many of you feel that way about your own. It's just the grind, spalting, Shadetree, pinstripe, Andy's amazing handle shaping--it is more than the sum of its parts.

The family is of course the best part. I've been doing some knife work with my oldest this year, and she's being incredibly responsible. I think I might gift her a knife next spring to use on our outdoor adventures. I'd love to get her an esquire (I've been following Mist's journey in hunting a knife for his daughter), but it is probably too much too soon. I'd love any suggestions you might have via PM.

I suppose my next thread may be winter adventures....

Great story Michael! That is something they will remember for a long time. Some of nature's dangers help us to be more aware. Now they will have a good reason to pay attention while out in the woods.

How Cool are Kids! Beautiful family, and nice beard. We should all start a fiddlebacks and beards thread hahahaha.

God is Good!

Thanks Mike for sharing the pics and the family outing. It's a great day when you can be out in the woods with the fam and an FF.

Thanks for sharing Michael! Glad you and the family were safe. Me and mine were hiking around in TN and my oldest saw/heard a snake and that was the point we turned back too! She still remembers and reminds us once in a while how she 'saved' the family from the snake! Both my oldest girls keep bugging me when I'm going to give them their first knife . . . they don't know it, but there is going to be a cool little stocking stuffer this year! I'd like to eventually get each of my girls a Fiddleback, but I'm not sure when that will be.

I hear you about you BC being special! My Runt holds a special place to me too . . . I'm torn! I wanted to originally hand it down to my littlest runt since they were both adopted into the family at the same time, but I really like it!!! I guess someday I'll have to get another Runt from Andy that is super special so that I can hand down my first to my baby girl.

You've been blessed with a cool family! Keep on keeping on. It's great being a Dad.

Oh, and Redbird777, the beard and fiddlebacks thread just wouldn't be to those of us who can only grow sparse stubble!! JK

Loved seeing these pics. Your family is beautiful. Thanks for posting. Good families with good tastes in knives.

I "used" to have a bad ass beard. Until Andy told me if I didn't shave it I would die. It would prevent a good enough seal on the respirator.

So now I just have a "decent" beard:p
