making hook knives

can anyone help what's the best steel to make a hook knife with
and where in the uk can I buy it
 
Define "hook knife"... I've never heard the term, and google turns up everything from karambits to strap cutters.
 
To carve spoons, I usually use a scorp, which is sort of like a bent chisel.

They're usually called crooked knives if it's the large type. I've seen hoof knives, broken straight razor blades, and files used over the years in both old and new reproductions. I've also seen them newly made from simple tool steels like 1095 or O-1.

Here's an old article from 1939 (courtesy B. Levine) on making one from an old file. Lots of files were being repurposed during the 1920's - 40's.
