Hello folks,First post!

I have been fooling around with knifemaking for a couple of years now and I think the quenching oil has gotten into my blood.
I did a "how to" post at assaultweb.net for the first timer and it was well recieved.Check it out..........

XxBOSSMANxX,
Hello and welcome to the forums. I think many will appreciate your tutorials on knifemaking. I just have one question? I thought that files were tool steel? I was under the idea that steels marked W were water hardening steels and not oil (transmission fluid) quenching steels.

Right you are,striper.W-2 is a water hardening steel, but when a piece as thin as a knife blade is being hardened, oil can be used and is actually preferable to water which could shock the steel to a point where warpage and cracking could occur. If we had made a large thick object from W-2 we would want to use water or brine because the oil probably wouldnt do the trick.
