I am thinking about making micarta myself for a non-knife project actually. Is there specific type of epoxy I need or would picking out something at Home Depot work well too? I'm hoping to make paper micarta b/c that seems like it would be cheapest to me, does just any paper work? Would shredded newspaper work?

Thanx for replies!

I have been making some for a while. Most of the epoxy that you get at Home Depot will not work very well. To thick and it to small of amounts to be useful. You can use the fiberglass resin that Home Depot sales depending on what you are going to use it for. Anykind of paper will work. Thicker paper is easier to use since it takes a lot less of it to make a given size piece. Newspaper would be O.K. but make sure you have a lot of it on hand, it will take a lot more paper then you would think it would. Something cheap and strong paper wise that you can try is the plain brown shipping paper that you use to wrap boxes and stuff up. Anyplace that sells mailing supplies should have it. Epoxy wise the thinner the better. System Three Epoxy works well, so does West System stuff. There are places to order it off of the internet. Anything that says it is a laminating epoxy should be fine to use. Given the amount of paper that you need if you can find some cheap cloth it may work out to be the same roughly price wise. Hope that helps.
