making my first flipper

hey just wondering how on earth do you go about designing a flipper? is it much different than a normal folding knife? How do you make the blade pop out nice and smooth? Lastly can it be done well without the use of a mill?

My goal is to make a liner locking knife with a flipper that opens as smoothly as possible. This will be my first time making a liner lock and first time making a flipper knife as well and i aim to make a small batch of around 10 to 20 knives.

I am thinking of having a 410 stainless liner with either a patina'd piece of copper or mokume wrapped around it to form the handle (think hignokami styled handle that goes over the liner and blade.) I am not sure if i can make that work but i really want to try. If not ill go for the more basic design where you have multiple slabs stacked on top of each other possibly with a bolster.

I do have access to a laser cutter which i use for some prototyping and i might be able to get access to a manual mill if i can sweet talk my way into it.

Any useful pointers are greatly appreciated!

No need for a mill. But a good, or at least accurate drill press is a must. You have to be able to drill 90 deg holes. If your going for a liner lock I'd really suggest titanium, it's just about the perfect material for the lock.
