Is there anyone who could please tell me where I can buy a piece of 4140 or 4150 that is 6" x 6" and any where from 12" to 36" long? I desperately want a post anvil. Please please help me fellow Bladesmiths!
Something like this one by Chuck Robinson, by the way if someone has bought one these from Chuck if you don't mind could you tell me how much he charges for something like this.

Discarded pieces of railroad track or Heavy I beams.

^ +1.

you should be able to pick up either at a local scrapyard, you might even find an anvil at the scrapyard.

if you use a 6x6, at minimum i would add a piece of 3/4"-1" steel plate on top so you have a more robust striking surface.

here are some threads:

p.s. you are going to have to make a real sturdy base that won't move while you hammer away. also, you might want to get some hearing protection, striking metal can be loud.

I want to buy a solid chunk of 6"x6" 4140 or 4150, 12" to 36" long. I will stand it up on its end to use as the strikeing face and then weld some thick plate to the bottom to stabilize it and harden the face of it. I was just wondering if anyone who knew of a good supplier of 4150 that was willing to sell such a small piece (well small to them). Any help is greatly appreciated.
