Took the WSK out today and gathered some Fatwood and Pine Pitch to make some fire-starters.

Splitting fatwood is no problem for this beast of a knife, a little extra blade length would have been nice but I still managed to get more than enough fatwood for what I needed...

That's two decent sized bits for my needs...

Once home I filled a section of an egg box with the pitch mixture and made some fatwood shavings with the WSK...

Topped it off with the shavings and I had my completed fire-starter !

Nice! Toss that in the pit, and things will go up pretty quick.. Fire made easy!

Good Lord Pit. You have enough tinder in this pic to last you 1-2 seasons. ;) I don't collect fat wood really. I do collect birch bark. There is more than enough fat wood here in the N.W. Birch bark is harder to find. Great pic BTW!!!!!!!!!

Fatwood is some really great stuff. I rarely use it, but that's only because I don't need it that often to get a fire. But in bad conditions, it always has worked.

ive never used pine pitch,
does it burn black and sooty
like it does when it settles in fatwood?

I'd say they would burn for between 8 to 12 mins....maybe longer and very hot !

And yeah it does start off burning with a lot of black smoke, I observed this this evening as I watched it fill the living room amid a torrent of swear words from Mrs Pit.
Maybe they are best kept for the camp fire !!!!:o

I would pay good money to have been there for that, on the sidelines..... :D

Pitdog's posts have convinced me that Vancouver Island is nothing but a floating mound of fatwood. :D
