Making prototype knife

Hi guys, my name is Michael. I work for the RCMP in Montreal and have been for 13 years now. I have been collecting, using and drawing knives ideas and tools for a bit on the computer, I've shown them to many of my partners in the precinct and the police fraternity (union), and they seem pretty interested, the fraternity told me if I were to show them a prototype and it would be approved, there would be good chances of me getting subsidizing to produce a few and if that doesn't work, heh, I would've designed a knife. Though I studied engineering in college, I still have a few questions and am sure you guys will be able to help me out.

I'm pretty much positive on what materials I want to use, I have done the drawings in 3d on the computer and everything seems good to go. But since I will be making about 5 prototypes, I would like them to be exactly the same, is there a way I can have the whole knife CNC'd, and then have it sharpened professionally or should I have the knife cut with water jet / laser and then have the blade profiled and sharpened?

I am still astounded by the level of skill many of you have, but am just curious as to wether a knifesmith could make the same knife over and over while still keeping the numerous blades identical?

Being a proud owner of two sebenzas, a strider SNG spearpoint and a zt302, I have very high expectations and will only satisfied by ultimate quality and am not looking to get rich... yet

cheers guys and stay safe!

I'm not after your business but there many who probably will be. All your written background doesn't count for much without some sketches and better yet an actual pattern with required (?) materials as you would want and the number you want . If you have a cost limit giving that may help some to be interested and some to drop out. I hope this helps and you find several makers that can show you good work. Frank

Any water jet or laser cutting firm can cut the blanks out as exact matches....two blades or two thousand....all will be exactly the same. The grinding of the bevels and finishing is done by hand. Many on this forum can take care of your order as far as getting the blanks cut and making the knives.

Nice as it sounds,CNC is not really an option. It would be possible to CNC the knives, but they would still need to be finished by hand....and would cost a fortune each.

As Frank said, a few more details will be needed:
Knife style and size - eg., 150mm blade tactical fighter
Materials - eg., CPM154 blade with Black canvas Micarta handle
Finishing - eg., Mirror polished blade
Special considerations - eg., Marked "RCMP SPECIAL", serial numbered
Other accessories - eg., kydex sheath with Tek-Lok

Give us some more details, and see if someone up your way can help.

Knife style: spearpoint, tanto
Size: 3.5" blade 3/16th thick
Material: S30V, titanium liners, g10 scales.
Finish: stonewashed
Serial numbers: 1 to 100

I already have an amazing knife smith here in Montreal willing to make them, I was just curious as to wether a CNC machine could do it properly but I will have it water-jet cut and have it finished by hand ;)

thanks guys, will post pictures when I get the first one
