Making scales for a Izula

I am interested in making some handles for my Izula and was wondering if anyone had documented the process of putting them on their own Izula. I would like to know what material and fasteners you folks are using. And if you are gluing the slabs or just using the fasteners. Really like to see a post from start to finish of the project. Thanks for any suggestions!

Even I would like to know the process. Been hunting for blue denim micarta as well. I guess it will go well on my black Izula.

I would also like to see a tutorial on this!!!

I made one attempt to make my own scales for my Izula. Lets just say, I still dont have any!!:D

Here's a good tutorial.....never mind the bolster, just extend the handle material further towards the blade...
see it here.

Pretty much how I did mine. I used Corby bolts for the pin.....they screw together then grind off the heads....I'm no fan of the production screw look.

I am in the process of making some with surfboard resin/ fiberglass cloth/ and denim. It is a side project, so progress will be slow. It is my first attempt at handles and these materials are experimental for me (I have worked on surfboards a lot, but never knife handles and never with denim -the denim reacts very differently than fiberglass cloth).

When I get them done I am going to post them up.

I am unsure about where to buy fasteners too. I like the style that RAT uses.

^^That knife is beautiful rayban!

Rayban, That looks awesome. You sure did a great job on that one!!:thumbup:

Rayban that looks great. I have seen that tutorial before and it covers most everything. I have now come to the conclusion that I would like to make a set of scales that are removable. I am guessing that the handles soon to be available from RAT can be easily removed? I may just have to wait it out until they are available. Government, post em when you got em. What color Izula you gonna put those denim scales on? I am going to try some black canvas micarta when I try it.

Is any one selling there services to make these handle scales? IM pretty sure im not talented enough to pull something like that off lol

Rayban, I love that look. How long did it take you to complete the work?

Probably just about 2 hours total of hands on time....but then there's waiting for epoxy to dry, sanding.....more sanding....so it was done over the course of 3 days....

Thanks all for the kind words...:)

I used a 5/32" piece of walnut to fill in the triangular gap in my Izula and glued that to one side of the scales.

It fits tightly so there is no movement, then use machine screws or Corby rivets to bind the two sides together.

No need to epoxy anything using this method.

The advantage of machine screws is that you can easily remove the scales. The advantage of Corby is they look better.

I made a few pairs for fellow Blade Forum members.
