Making the Knife/pistol - laws?

I have seen a couple makers make some excellent knife/pistol combination pieces and I have a question just out of curiosity (I am nowhere near the skill level to try building one yet so don't worry lol). When you do a combination piece like that, are you subject to any special BATF licensing? I figure porbably not on the blackpowder pieces (if so, I'd be curious to know), but what if a piece fires a cartridge? I haven't seen a cartridge firing piece myself, but I'm sure someone's made one... Is there something where you can make 1 "prototype" but just not start producing multiple copies without the proper licensing? Thanks.

Tim

Tim, there are no Federal restrictions on traditional muzzleloaders at all. Check your state laws though.
On breech loaders, you can build them from scratch for your own personal use. They may not be transfered in any manner to another person, even after your death. There are restrictions on the type of firearms that may be made (no Full auto's or post ban semi configuration, Etc.)

Since this is a knife site and the question was a knife/gun combo, this is about all the information I can give you. You might want to check the builders forums on some of the gun sites.

Tim Its pretty much like Peter said. There are no laws against making a blackpowder gun and selling it at least in my state. Check your own state laws. A cartridge gun can be made but not be passed on to anybody.

The great thing about making a blackpowder pistol/knife combo is that You can shoot a stump with the pistol and dig the ricochet ball out of your leg with the knife. :D

In the great state of Maryland, IIRC, you can't build a cartridge-firing weapon without the proper license. On the other hand, they're quite lax on muzzleloader laws, restrictions, etc.

I think MA, NJ, IL and NY have some pretty crazy laws about muzzleloaders (from what I've heard others complain about...)

You could buy your own muzzleloader kit if you wanted. They have some inexpensive ones at Cabela's or Classic Arms Kits

Bruce - they even have an Elgin Cutlass kit at Classic Arms:

...neat-o! ;)

Muzzle loading firearms are legally transported via US mail without special consideration, as far I understand and I have had them sent to me by vendors and I have no federal license.

All this and more is subject to change as only this very week demonstrated by the mostly leftist Supreme Court who once again attacked the Bill Of Rights by pronouncing, in part, the First Amendment does not protect freedom of speech against the Government.

Rodger, it's refreshing to hear people who feel this way and aren't calling for armed rebellion. I don't understand why we can't all pull together to keep this country great. Our vote is the greatest weapon we have but there is too much infighting to make our voice heard.

Rant mode on:
I guess that make me non fresh. I dont see any change coming about through peaceful means. $$$ is ruling this country now. It's not looking like the America that my forefathers fought to protect and died for. I love this country with all my heart...but it's starting to look like the so called supreme court should be brought up on charges of destroying GOD given rights. Its obvious that our governing jackasses want nothing but more money in their coffers and that they fear the populous. A change will happen and it will be bloody I fear. I fully expect this to happen when Hillary gets into office and starts her socialist one world government plans.

Rant off:

Off to work on my manifesto

Mark

p.s Sorry about the thread drift and hijacking

That doesn't make you non-fresh Mark, it makes you a frustrated American like a lot of the rest of us. I agree, this isn't the country I was born in and I don't think it will ever be again.

This is a marginal subject for this forum but as I keep seeing knife control measures going hand in hand with gun control and personal freedom controls, I guess it can stand muster until the Mods pull it.

I fought for this country in an era when it was not at all popular to be in the Government for any reason. I worked for the Government after that for much of my adult life. I saw changes for the better and underhanded ways that the Government got around new Civil rights laws and policies.

We have now gone back not only to the way the government was in the 50's and 60's but they are worse now. I want a change also but the passion is not there to motivate the masses. With gun control, duck hunters don't care if there is an assault weapon ban, assault weapon people don't care if there are restrictions on 22's, environmentalists don't care if hunters can't hunt anymore. ATV riders don't care if the cities ban motor scooters. Teachers don't care if the Government requires a SSN for everyone. If you will notice from a governmental standpoint. Christians are dangerous nuts. Every other religion is the basis for terror and people who don't believe in god must be criminals. All should be controlled.

While I worked with the Feds on a fugitive task force, the feeling was always there should be a master database that was able to track anyone, anytime. This is understandable since the FBI, while unequaled in the labs and accounting offices, have to be the most incompetent group on earth when they had to go into the real world. Well it looks like they may get their database because no one seems to know how to prevent it.

My point is that everyone has a common goal, Freedom, we just won't get along with each other long enough to become a force in the country. Instead we remain fragmented splinter groups where the loudest voices are also the ones that should not be representing us.

There is good news and bad for me. The good news is that I am old enough that I can continue to thumb my nose at Neo America until I die. The bad news is that I have children that have to live here a little longer and my grandchildren will grow up thinking this is the way that a "free country" is supposed to be run.

Sorry everyone....rant off
