Making your own clip?

I have a few folders that I would like to make clips for, mainly because I feel they stick too far out of my pocket and their clips are way too long/shiny, for a city where I can't legally carry any kind of knife (but a concealed weapons permit and a gun is ok, go figure). So I have two questions:

* What kind of materials can I make it from? Any kind of sheet metal or wire I've looked at seems way too soft.

* Are there anyone who makes clips for various popular folders that live up to my requirements? Ie. Low-rider, gray/black color, shorter?

Hey, thanks there =) Not every day you get advise from a dead journalist ;) I'll look into his stuff.

I'd also like to look into making my own possibly, just for the challenge, so if anyone has any ideas, let me hear them.

knifekits.com has a lot of clips already made to choose from. might try there to save yourself the trouble. pretty sure they just screw on, you might have to drill a couple holes at most.

Played with the idea myself and have made a few out of Stainless sheet metal about 0.040 thick. Wanted a low rider for my Para Military. STR does some fine work according to others who have had it done by him. Mine will bend eaiser then the ones he makes, if it catches on something. His I think are hardened which helps them to keep their shape after being fabricated. I have EDC the Para for over 2 months and have had no problems with my clip. (maybe lucky)
Give it a shot yourself. Its fun to make the changes and making your knife a little personal.

I have a Millie and a Tenacious I want to do, and what you did there is more or less exactly what I have had in mind (similar patterns for fastening).

Do you think it would be possible to heat treat the metal you used, to make it harder?

I used 300 series stainless which cannot be hardened. You would have to go to a 400 series. Series that they make knife blades. You would not have it hardened to the same Rockwell as a knife blade would be but less. With this design you can get to the pivot screw through the hole in the clip. It would be easier (IMO) to practice on a piece of galvanized metal. I tried to go back where I posted this and the method w/pictures that I used to make this, as others wanted info on it. I can't do a search myself but maybe someone else might be able to find it. It was listed as Para Military Lowrider or something like that. Within the last 4 months I think. Best of luck.

Piano wire in 1/8th or 3/16th inch could make a nice clip if you had a way of mounting it like spyderco.

You could try use hack saw blades and take off the teeth with a bench grinder then heat it up and bend it to the way you like and drill a few holes.

I do the same,
Change the clips on the knifes I buy
To a more discret low ride clip
And that give me the itch to star making
My on knifes
I use .040 titanium which I have some
And anodize to a more discret color
End if get scratch anodize again
postme maybe a can set you whit a piece of TI
Best regard G.Valdez
