Making your own strop - a cautionary tale

Since there can't be a single thread about stropping without people getting told to make their own strops, I thought I'd give it a go. I was going to buy some leather, but never got around to it. One day my dad visited and he had bought me a wide leather belt at a second hand store (for this purpose). It seemed like a good piece of leather for my strops.

Before I cut and glued the leather to size I decided to try it out a little by just laying it on the wood. I started applying some chromium oxide compound when 30+ years worth of B.O. was released from the belt! :barf:

So, before I cut it up I had to wash the belt thoroughly. I used glycerine soap. Worked well enough. The moral of the story: if you're using an old belt, wash it first. :D

Bovine Oxide; it's faster, more aggressive compound for stropping than Cro. Oxide... ;):D

That's just nasty btw mrdeus. :barf:
