I have a bunch of Makita cordless 18V tools & batteries.
I have one Makita 12V cordless cutoff saw.

Home Depot is running a special seasonal sale on a 12V compact drill & impact driver for $99.
It comes with the tools a charger & at least one battery. I already have two 12 V batteries & a charger.

The catch here is - the sub compact 18V Drill & impact tools are about the same handy size as the 12 V. They run about $130 more than the 12 V @ $229.

My ~ 9-year-old Milwaukee 12 V set's batteries are starting to fade - otherwise, I would have bought the Milwaukee 12 V cut off saw instead of the Makita.

I guess what I'm really asking here is - does anyone have the 18V sub compact Makita drill & impact driver set?

For construction I always go with 18v. For home I guess it depends on what you’re using it for. For me bigger is always better for drills. Like you said, the footprint is about the same anyway.

To answer your question, the Makitas work great. Love the impact. Great for driving long screws.

I've got the XDT14 & run it W/5.0AH 18v li batteries, Love the compact size it
has plenty of torque to run 3" deck screws. I picked up 1/4 & 3/8 adapter bits
so i can use it with my socket sets
