I was in the mall the other day and saw an army supply store i couldnt help but notice a set of assisted oppening blades when i asked to look at them the man told me it was swat eddition and had a glass breaker and seatbelt cutter. everyone knows these knives are crappy but this one seemed sturdy and well bilt it was dirt cheap like 35 dollars cheap!!! but i cant help but wonder if it would be a cool edition to just beat on and edc. For something that cheap it was well bilt my question to you guys is.... have you ever bought something similar and it worked out great.:o

First: I had trouble understanding if you meant similar or simulated/simulation (a maker?). Second, I've had cheap blades before, and not been impressed. Well made ones (which I call inexpensive, not cheap) sure, but I don't trust cheap locks anymore. Was it a linerlock? Because if it was, I really need to ask how you determined if it was well built. I don't TOUCH a linerlock most of the time; and make very few exceptions for reputable makers. My rule of thumb (pun!) for linerlocks is that the maker needs to be able to lose (be sued) for me to take a chance at losing (a finger). If you want the blade, go for it- sometimes the ergos are executed very well for your particular hand, and it's worth being able to point to elements you like. If you're looking for a hard use knife, I can't tell you to buy something cheap, as when I have I've nearly had them fold on me.

Man, I got all excited, I was hoping for a mall Ninja story. :)

Who made the knife? Did the blade just say China?
If SOG or Kershaw put their name on it, I would say it's a decent knife for the car, survival kit, camping, whatever... but if it's some cheap knockoff then it shouldn't be more than $10-$15... but in the end, get what you want. If it feels nice and you like it, then get it. Generally you get what you pay for at the mall, or less than.

many years ago I bought a knife on flea market for $15 , it was made in Pakistan and had no name , steel was soft but I could make it sharp (or close to sharp ) it served me well for may years until it was stolen .

What is the difference in currencies and / or did you mean USD or Cdn? [sorry for not knowing the difference]. Because you can get a Rat-1 for $30 US, great knife.

To actually answer your question though, lol, yes I did that and it worked out with a Smith and Wesson knife but there were so many failures before and after that which only caused me wasted time and money, if I were you I would do more research. Check the Rat out, etc.

+1 on the mall ninja expected story, you owe us one now! ;)

Do you break much glass? Do you cut many seatbelts?

The big problem is that there are actually a lot of good knives out there for $35.

If it were $5, it wouldn't really matter. But if you can get, say, a Kershaw Skyline, Spyderco Persistence, Rat-1, Kabar Dozier, Byrd, etc for the same amount of money, it would be foolish to forsake that for what is most likely anonymous brandless Chinese junk.

If breaking glass and cutting seatbelts is important, you could still get an auto emergency hammer and a Byrd knife and still come out ahead.

The only "cheap" knives I would ever be swayed into buying would be fixed blades - the worst that can happen is the steel is soft or difficult to get an edge on.

Cheap flea market or supply store folders are a problem waiting to happen IMHO.

If ya need a glass breaker a KABAR K2 Rescue knife kit can be had for around $15. Never seen one in person but it has to be better than the mall ninja blade.
