My “Malla”, Which I think I will call Bhojpuri-43 (B-43), arrived this afternoon. Two days after order! I love the feel of this khuk. The handle is near perfect, or likely will be perfect after I round the edges of the ring a bit. The length and circumference or very comfortable and the ring fits perfectly between my middle and ring finger which really locks my hand in tight. The handle is pretty much exactly 5”, including the bolster.

The blade is a long Hi M-43 blade without a doubt. You can see this in the photos. The spine is about .338 at the bolster and widens out to about .380 near the shoulder or there abouts. If memory serves, .375 is 3/8”, but I could be wrong. The belly is slightly wider than my Tirtha M-43, but the shape is near identical. The point is nice also. The edge has an issue, but we’ll discuss that later. The real showstopper with this khuk is the curve. It is more curved than my M-43, including the handle, and feels great. It is very blade heavy since the blade is so long. The blade is 13 ¾” long! That’s long for an 18” khuk. This khukuri is all business. When swung half heartedly, it seems impossible to stop this thing. It will probably chop like there’s no tomorrow. It’s certainly not quick in the hand, but at 36 ounces, it’s not going to be too fast.

The blade issue I mentioned earlier is about a 4” of chips, all very shallow. They cover much of the belly, or sweet spot. A photo is below. I’m pretty sure this is the polishing/annealing issue often mentioned on the forum. I’ve just never seen it like this. Long chunks of steel are just knocked off with some pieces still ready to come off. It is very shallow, maybe a millimeter. I really want you guys with more experience to please tell me it’s the polishing and will sharpen out. I believe this is the case, since the chunks only seem to go to a shallow and uniform depth. None go any deeper. As though there is a brittle edge that needs to be cleaned off.

I really like this khukuri. As I said on the 12-15 DOTD thread, it is most certainly not a Malla. It is blatantly obvious to me it’s an M-43 with a ringed handle. More authentic maybe than the standard HI M-43. It also seems likely the M-43 was based off the Bhojpuri, since this one matches the Bhojpuri AC was selling, in profile anyway, pretty closely. Again, I like it. It’s a brute, no doubt. It seems it should be lighter, with the spine being what it is. Auntie also sent a wonderful Christmas present. I’ll have to showcase it in another thread, since the Mrs. Is waiting for me to get off the computer. Thanks for looking, take care and God bless.

This one really shows the nice curve.

In hand. Is that not an M-43 profile?

Now for the chips.

Thanks again.

It is the cutest mini-Hasiya/letter opener I've ever seen! I've never seen a mini-Hasiya before. It even came with a neat little wooden circle holder. It has holes for a thong or string. I guess in Nepal it would be their version of a neck knife;). What an awesome and unique gift. Thank you so much Yangdu! Merry Christmas and God bless:D.

Nice review!
Those chips should sharpen right out. Give it a go and see what happens. It may take a couple sharpenings to reveal the hardened metal.

Thanks Karda for the qrick response. That's what I was hoping you would say. I really, really like this khuk. I was actually using my tirtha WWII to clear some overgrown Plum delights when it arrived. Afetr using the 25 oz. WWII, the B-43 felt like an axe. After I fondled it for awhile, it really grew on me. If they would taper the blade more and get the weight down to 28-30, I think folks would really like it. As it is, it is so much like an M-43, but the handle feels better than my M-43. I hope they make more of these. In my opinion, it's a real sleeper. I think most folks just didn't know what to think of it. That, and it needs to go on a diet. Also, it must be the state khukuri of Oklahoma. The snap on the sheath has the OK state seal on it! I thought that was pretty cool. Thanks again and take care.

Those used to be for the Yvsa Cherokee Special.

I guess the new sarki just found them in the parts bin and figured snaps is snaps;).
I agree with Karda - those minichips should disappear with sharpening.

John,

As always you came up with superb photographs (Awesome weather in OK as well!)
I noticed the tang is more curved than the custom M-43 you have next to it.The handle seemed to fit into your palm nicely.
The "Bhojpuri" looks heftier than the M-43. I would think a tapered tang will result in a lighter handle hence increasing the already scary downward force.
If you notice there are 2 types of old school Malla Auntie's selling now;
1. Curved profile like M-43
2. Wilkinsons/WWII themed angled profile without bolster.

Both designs are very well made (another reason i was struggling to cope).
Certainly you've got a very hardworking khuk on hand now!

Curvedvsangled.jpg

The curve from pommel to tip are basically a crescent which will assist in an almost unstoppable swing with least force to operate.Auntie might just released "a sleeper" that chops very well in this matter. Again Boomerang model or Teardrop Sirupate comes into mind.

I would first strop the chips area to rid the extra metal. Filing it is possible but you ought to be careful not to over-do it which will destroy the mirror finish.
Then i will wipe it clean and brush the edge on silicone carbide sandpaper, say grit 1000 just to test the grade. If needed i would go down to 800 then work myself up to 1500grit or more.

On a side note, my dream house will have a compound big enough to build just a cabin like yours John! It would be a wonderful getaway on the weekends (especially having to sleep outside after a row with wifey) :D

Indeed if a tapered tang shaven down to 23-26Oz with funds come in ready i will get a Bhojpuri-43 in a heart beat!

How's your shoulder doing now Bud? If you are swingin i reckon it's all sweet.;)

Nice Hasiya Jr. to play along!

Jay, the weather was great yesterday. Short sleeve weather in the afternoon. But, I'm in central/South Texas, not Oklahoma:). The handle actually fits my hand like a glove. I can actually say it is an incredible handle. This khuk really has some awesome features. If the weight was less, I can say this would be my favorite khuk so far hands down! The curve really does make it feel good. As far as I'm concerned, it was the deal of the year and I'm just thrilled I was able to snatch it up! My shoulder is still healing, but my doctor said at this point it's "no pain/no gain". I took it kind of easy and the bushes weren't that big. The 16.5" WWII did a good job on them. Right know it's probably the most versitile khuk I own. Thanks for the edge advice, I'm not worried about it anymore. Thanks everyone for looking. Take care and God bless.

Jay, this photo is from SpiralTwista's thread on military pattern updates. I hope it's OK to repost his photo. If not, I apoligize Spiral. By the way, this is a great thread if anyone hasn't already reviewed it in the Cantina library. Notice how my "Malla" is very much like the top two and your "Malla" is very much like the number 3 and 4 from the top. These Shaila "Mallas" are surely WWII era military pattern designs. Take care.

Great pics! I got it's twin a couple weeks back and I agree with your assesment. In a few quick outings, it has proven itself to be one heck of a chopper. Overall a great khuk.

I knew this was a historical khuk! I discovered an old photo of a 19th century Cossack holding an exact copy of the B-43 khukuri while standing near his trampoline. It was obviously taken during a mild Russian winter. Take care and God bless.

Reason: Posting before morning coffee is unwise

Berk, I just saw this cheeky post and i've got to say it applies to me as well! :)

John why is Cossack doing shirtless in the middle of Winter?

From Spiral's pic it's the evolution of Military Khukuri to the current BAS.

The more i look at your Malla it looks like a X between Ganga Ram & M-43.
Could have been Mk2 at the closest.

I didn't get any Malla but the one without bolster is quite identical to the Pre-Wilkinson 51 model, which many gurkhas dislike due to the weird handle.
(I believed Captain Indra Gurung complained that handle on Wilkinson's wasn't comfy)

Both Malla handles are the same with fat ring and nothing like Wilkinson's.That being said BOTH model have fans of its own with a unique cho to go.

There aren't just that many khuk in HI that's without bolster.

"John why is Cossack doing shirtless in the middle of Winter?"

Jay, It's a typical South Texas December:). It's been 70 F the past couple of days. My son always wants his photo taken with knives, so I thought I'd surprise him by posting the shot, with a little work;). He's always running around the yard "fighting" communists, terrorists, Nazis, you name it! The camo pants are a constant, the shirt is optional. Rambo rarely wears one!

Pmwc78, I wondered if this was the only one. I'm growing more fond of this one by the hour. I'm glad you agree. After I grind the ring down a little, the handle will feel perfect in my hand.

Take care and God bless.
