I've alway considered purchasing a Malla and with the sale going on now seems like a good time. However, the weight of 2.25 lbs listed on the shopping site always scares me away (too heavy). The ones that I see listed on the bargain sales always seem lighter. Just wondering what the weights are on the formite owned ones and if they seem to be a light quick fighter. How do they compare to a GS, Chit, or Siru, of the same length.

I have two, and they run 18" and 21 oz. in wood and 19" and 23 oz. in horn respectively. Both by Kumar. I would really be interested in one that weighed a full 2.2 lbs or 35 oz., as I think it would be a hell of a good chopper.

Maybe the first specimens were that heavy, so that's how it got listed on the HI site, but everyone I have seen for sale ran between 17 and 19" and I don't think weighed more than about 24 oz. or so.

The Malla is one of my favorites, along with the Chitlangi, and IMHO would really shine in a longer 21" to 25" length. To me, they feel like a better balanced Kobra; I like the flat backs and the curve of the blade. But other than the Kobra, I like all the blades of this basic geometry, the Chitlangi, and Chainpuri and the Sirupati. There are just seemingly small variations among them that can make a big difference in how they feel. For some reason I have just never liked the feel of the Kobra and can't tell you why.

The Malla's are light and fast, but still have a nice solid feel to them that is very pleasing, so would make a good all-around khuk IMO.

The Malla that was for sale today was a great deal. If another comes along you should snatch it up, but with the discount Uncle Bill is offering right now you can still get a new one made up for 25% off.

Good luck!

I got one a few weeks ago, very low price, only becuase the stitching was crooked on the back of the scabbard where you can't normally see it. I think it was advertised as 21oz. Very well balanced.

let me know if you are interested, as I have become a sirupati fan lately.

The Malla is a great all around blade IMO, but I am looking to get more sirus and more AKs.

Mine's close to 2 lbs and cuts like a fury. Feels more like a big WWII than a sirupati.

Every HI blade is unique - hence identical length Mallas could end up light or heavy depending on which kami made it and on which day :)

You could ask Uncle to pick you a lighter Malla from the stock he has available.

I have an older HI Malla from a trade and it is a quick cutter. Great balance. Like an 18" Chitlangi, it feels like an extension of your hand- almost weightless.

On the weapon-tool scale I feel the Malla leans toward weapon rather than tool for whatever that might be worth.
