so I was looking on the Salk store and saw a knife with the brand name “MAM”. From what I can gather it is a Portugal Opinel and they were made before Opinel from what the package says. I want it because this particular one has a sheepsfoot blade. Does anyone have any expirience with this brand?

I have one because of flatblackcapo flatblackcapo . He probably can help you. I carry mine in my pack at all times.

Baronyx is an internet seller on this forum who deals in Mam. He's a nice guy and should be able to give you some info. He's got a sheepsfoot Mam on his website. He specializes in inexpensive but quality knives (e.g. otter, douk-douk, etc.) He offers to put a special edge on the knife for a few dollars. It's worth it, he does a good job.

I have the sheepsfoot MAM and it is a great slicer, mine stays out in the shed and breaks down cardboard boxes. The blade responds well to stropping and when it does need to be sharpened it only takes a minute or so on the stones. The blade is ground quite thin so it is very efficient. The action only changes slightly with changes in humidity, and the liner lock does its job, but note that it is operated in the opposite direction from most other liner locks I have encountered. I've never had a problem opening mine with gloves on, which is another plus. I was so pleased with mine that I also ordered two other versions of their knives.

Knifecenter has two pages of them with various blade shapes and handle materials.
I have one - good knife, I just prefer Opinels (personal taste)

go check out the sailors of the sheep‘s foot main thread probably some more info on the mam sheep‘s foot in there.

I have a couple of MAMs that I'm very happy with. (One is a liner lock model, and I actually prefer the "opposite direction" operation to which sitflyer sitflyer referred.) Here are my two next to an Opinel #7 and Opinel #6:

I have the Tipica, in the middle, and the Douro, another liner lock that resembles an Opinel 8. Most of their patterns are available as liner locks or pure friction folders. The Tipica is my bagel knife, to slice the bagel, then to spread the cream cheese. For a while, I carried it every day, but the Okapi Biltong, on top, has supplanted it in recent months.

You could carry either of these knives for years without seeing anybody else carry one.

My recommendation is GET ONE! I carry my MAM often, I find it more comfortable in the pocket that the Opinel, do to it's slimmer profile. I suggest http://www.baryonyxknife.com/mam.html for your MAM shopping, great service, good guy and forum supporter. They come with a liner lock and without ( friction folder ).
I charred the handle on the spear point MAM.

That spearpoint Turned out well.

I have a few in my kitchen. Good utility knives and great for sharpening practice. Nice thin carbon knives, similar to Opinel

Unless there's another BF Trads member in your neighborhood! ;)
Henry Beige Henry Beige , the number of knife models you and I have in common is surprisingly(?) large.:cool:
I have, and enjoy immensely, each of the models you posted here. (Well, my Rough Rider marlin spike is smooth white bone instead of jigged red bone.)

De gustibus....

Yes, I, too prowl the lower end of the price spectrum. ;-{>
You have some good taste in knives. There is a lot of value there, and some interesting knives.
