First time with mammoth and damasteel.
Odin's Eye pattern
Tapered tang
hollow ground
browned bolsters
mammoth ivory
gold plated screws look bigger in the bolsters because of the shadow, but they are all the same size
Blade to bolster 2.25" long 5.75" overall length
Comments and critiques welcome. Thanks for looking

Very nice. Those scales are really beautiful. Nice overall shape too.

"browned bolsters" I don't understand. Can you explain how that is done?

Kind regards,

Jos

That's nice! I'm curious about the "browned bolsters" also.

Thanks for the comments guys. By browned bolsters means I just colored them brown by heating them and using an anitique gun browning solution made by Birchwood casey. You just heat slightly with a heat gun then swab on the solution with a cotton ball. It doesn't show as well in the pictures but it matches up to the brown in the mammoth really well and I don't think it looks bad with the gold screws.

your knife has a very pleasing shape, and the ivory is quite interesting:thumbup:
Damasteel is very cool stuff.

Ryan thats a beauty. Are the scales held on with epoxy pins? I cant tell but see large lightening holes in the tapered tang. I bet that makes it very well balanced too. I plan to try damasteel sometime for a Carribean project. Where did you buy yours?

Thanks guys. The browning was easier than I expected and I'm pleased with the look. The first swath of browning I was afraid I had messed up because it was copper colored, but gets darker with each pass.

Mr. Bump I actually do my scales like you do with super thin super glue. These scales are held on by the screws, and the super glue. Not using expoxy has really helped my fit and finish. Everytime I dry fit then use epoxy it threw my tolerances off just a hair and I might have a slight epoxy line. Attatching the scales with screws and wicking super glue around the edges really seems to combat this problem and still seals out moisture. The large holes you see were beveled then I peened brass into the holes, drilled, and taped the holes. This gave me a place to screw into. Even with no lightning holes this knife is so small and so thinly tapered my bride commented several times about how light the knife felt. Also I purchased my damasteel from Sandy at http://www.giraffebone.co.za/web/contact_us.asp

Here's a pic of the brass peened into the holes. Like I said I beveled around both sides of the holes so that the brass did not pull through either side.

It is lovely little knife. I like the materials. The broing of the bolsters is a neat idea, that I like very much.
