I had a customer contact me about making him a frame handle with a little up sweep, I told him to send me a sketch of what he wanted and I'd see what I could do. This is what we ended up with. This was the first frame handled big knife I had ever made using Mammoth scales and it offered a nice challenge to get the handle shaped like he wanted and still get the scales to work. I like having a little more material to work with in case I slip a little.
OAL- 14 1/8" with a 9 1/4" blade. Mammoth scales, titanium spacers and liners heat colored and file worked, 6 N/S domed pins.

Thanks for looking,

Bill

nice work... came together beautifully. And posted just as I'm drawing up sketches for a frame handled mammoth ivory knife. ;-)

Great looking knife. Okay, I'll bite. How is the handle held in place? ;)

Thanks for the kind words guys, really appreciated.

Joe - pins, pins and more pins. There's 6 hidden pins running thru the tang and into the scales, spacers and guard, the liners have been drilled with
multible holes to allow good epoxy coverage and penetration, plus the tang and damascus frame has been notched. Its there
to stay until the cows come home.;)

LOL. I was afraid of that. I am looking at doing my first ever frame handle for the Belgian show in November with a pair of mammoth scales I have. How do you peen the pins on such a delicate handle material?

Very, very nice Bill  I love the trailing point lines of the blade.

Wild looking Damascus in the blade. What do you call the pattern and what type steels were used to create it ?

Thanks for giving us a look ;)

Bill, that is a fine looking knife. Every time I see rounded pins on Ivory it makes me nervous! The handle came out mint.

Sweet looking knife. I like the subtle touch of color on the liners.

Bill, I hope you don't mind me answering Joe's question of how to peen pins in Ivory. Very carefully and treating yourself to your favorite alcoholic beverage when done to calm nerves.:D

Thanks again everyone.

Joe I just treat it like everything else anymore, I use to be super careful and that always seemed to create more problems. I used N/S pins because of their softness, then placed a piece of masking tape over the pin to protect the ivory, filed the pin to the height I wanted about .025 and then using a small tack hammer lightly tap, tap, tap. Then to the buffer with a fairly course wheel and black compound, once I got the edged buffed smooth I went to a real loose wheel and white compound.

David- 1080 & 15n20, its a W pattern that was laddered big then stretched, laddered again and stretched again to the size I wanted.

Thanks again,

Bill

Don't know how I could have missed this thread?

Anyway, BEAUTIFUL knife!

Kind regards,

Jos
