Here is a Bowie I build for the 2014 CKG show and Murray White generously photographed. The 9" twist pattern Damascus blade is made from 304 layers of 1095 and 15N20, I created under the tutelage of a great friend and bladesmith Paul Savage. The handle is frame construction and all the components (Guard, Ferrules, Frame, Pommel, and Nut) are made from plum browned O1 accented with Germany silver spacer and liners. The fossilized mammoth ivory scales were left proud of the fittings and attached with stainless pins. All together this knife is 13-1/2" long.

Thank you for looking and comments are welcomed.

Nice looking piece, James. Glad to see somebody else using plum brown.

I love using plum brown for fittings, but the stuff has not been available in Canada for a couple years now:( Might I inquire where you got it from??

Nice Damascus, great use of color. From the pics, the handle looks a bit too square, but may be just an illusion.

I hope James is ok with this but I agree Darcy, as I think the image portrays the knife accurately -- or at least as close as I can make it as that is my goal with each photo I do when offering my services to makers attending CKG as well as the images I do of our collection.

Wow, awesome looking knife James.
I had the same thought as Darcy initially regarding the handle,
But knowing James's work, bet it falls right in the hand for a decent size paw.

I purchased the last two bottle of plum brown a local gun shop had. It is not allowed to be imported into Canada anymore because Canadain Broder Protection requires a MSDS for importation which Birchwood does not offer.

This handle is not contoured in my normal style, but was made in order to retain as much of the natural colouring in the ivory as possible. All the corners have been nicely round with a minimum of a 1/4" radius.

Thank you everyone

Thanks, figured you must have found some older stock sitting on a shelf somewhere...........
Again, good job on the knife. I can see the reason to retain as much bark as possible on the mammoth.......pretty stuff.
Darcy:)

Overall fit/finish looks top notch and I like the contrast of the plum browned fitting with your Damascus.
To my eye the handle does look a little too square and bulky for the rest of the Bowie.

That killed me when I picked it up, I was wishing I had bigger hands so I could buy it !

I took another broadside when I picked up a Paul Savage knife with killer Damascus and the handle was too fat for me too... :foot:
