Hey Guy's. I have a Northwoods Mammoth ivory barlow and the MI has some kind of clear coat on it. Does anyone know what they might use for the coating? I just think it would look much better in its raw state. I know it would not be protected as well without the coating. Thanks for any help.

You would be as well asking them what to use to protect it, personally I'd ask them about using Renaissance Wax, museums created and use it. It might react with the clear coat and there's no way of knowing what it is without asking but the Ren Wax would do the Mammoth Ivory slabs itself no harm.

Yea, I thought a good wax would work well as far as protecting the ivory. I would like to remove the clear coat as it seems to make the scales look like plastic..

Are you sure it's coated and not just highly polished?
Clear coating ivory, tusk, horn is usually not done.

No I'm sure. It could be just polished. I certainly wont mess with it until I know for sure. Thanks.

If you don't already have the contact info, you might send an email to Derrick at KSF (KnivesShipFree) to ask him. He's a member dealer here, and owns the Northwoods line, as I understand it. His BF profile page is linked below:

I've not heard of mammoth ivory (or elephant) being clear-coated. As others have said, I think it's generally just polished; maybe waxed sometimes.

Thank you David for the link. You may be right about the polish. I'll send him an Email anyway, Doesn't hurt to ask.
