With all the talk of Mammoth Ivory, a friend suggested I post this newest ladder-pattern Fancy, a custom order.

8 1/2 inches of laddered 1084 and 15n20, with laddered, shaped guard, laddered butt cap, grooved twist collar and finial, file-worked nickel-silver spacers and multi-piece case...oh, and some really special Mammoth for the handle.

Very nice John.
Also congratulations on your and Paul's dagger being in this month's Blade as "Best Damascus".

Did the bar go up or what? There have been so many AWSOME blades posted here lately.
John that is one great looking knife. Just my nature to ask: how many layers in the final count? That damascus is unbelievable. I keep going back to look at it.

John you do such beautiful work...it's going to be a long wait until next September, but man o man will it be worth it. :)

Mammoth & damascus, my two favourite materials for knives! That tight ladder pattern is stunning. I think it would be very nice on smaller knives as well (folders maybe). Nice piece of mammoth ivory, nice details in the guard and the spacers.

Great work!

Kind regards,

Jos

looking good John. BTW I just got back from camping/fishing and I used your gents bowie with a stag handle and paul long sheath that you cleaned up for me a couple months ago and it performed great!! Not only does John make a beautiful knife but they work!

Great stuff John.

It would be hard to improve on this, but you could experiment with sterling or Argentium (a kind of stainless silver) spacers. That would raise the cost a bit but worth it on something like that. Or bronze for a different color. In fact, gold wouldn't be out of place on something that ambitious but cost would be an issue of course. I think one would want to do a composite spacer for gold - and undersized internal part in stainless and a thin rim in gold.

Also, with regard to spacers, my favorite treatment is a spacer with no filework but sized a few thousands wider than the handle and then rounded. That is both elegant and simple and provides a nice tactile transition between different parts of the handle. Just a different perspective.

Just to be clear, this is a great piece as it is, one I'd be proud to own.

um. Well it's all already been said. Just wanna cheer you on, too, John:thumbup:
