I'm looking for some mammoth ivory scraps. Bark only. If anyone has pieces the size of a thumbnail or larger that they have been hanging on to but have no use for, I will gladly pay for them. I'm looking to make some small items and need small but recognizable pieces. ALso, little chunks of stag.

Thanks!

I have some antler, it's local, not india stag. You are welcome to it if you want it. sorry can't help with the ivory.

Peter, Email me, I have what you are looking for. In fact I was about to post a question about making composite ivory with my scaps.

Afew years back, in one of the knife magazines (either "Blade" or "Knives Illustrated") there was an article on making mosaic ivory handle slabs. I'll see if i can dig up a copy.

Peter, let me know what you are looking for... while cutting up a rather large peice of DARK fossilized stuff tonight, it shattered into peices that are unusable to me but probably very nice for you, lots of colored cracks and bark colors...Just let me know what ya want and i will send ya what i got... I also have a bunch of thin blue bark scraps...

Let me know...

I found the article! Luckily, on one boring night, I made an index of articles that I found interesting in those two publications. The article is called "Making an Ivory Handle for only $19." The author is Terry Kranning. Knives Illustrated, October '96, pages 56 - 60.

I was going to ask the same thing the other day!I am looking to buy a couple pieces to make a nut and bridge for a guitar.Anybody got anything like that?I will get exact measurments of what I need tomorrow.Rough guess would be that I need to make a nice flat piece 2 1/2" wide,1/4" thick and about 1/2" tall for the nut and probably 6" wide,1/4" thick and 1/2" tall for the bridge. That is just a rough guess,I think that would give me room to work them to the exact size.Hogs tusk would probably work if I could find any big enough. If none of you have anything like that, could you maybe steer me in the right direction where I could find pieces like that reasonably?
Thanks,Ric

Thanks to all who replied. I'm very interested to try this material since I just finished reading a book on mammoths. There was some cool stuff in the book but it was maddeningly thin on details concerning the tusks and bones. ANyhow, it got me really wanting to see and try working some of this material.

I did learn that the blue color comes from the uptake of the mineral vivianite. I am assuming that that is probably a copper bearing mineral.....

Peter: I have fossilized walrus tusk with bark on it that I can give you a piece of and antler. You can pick it up when you come down to forge your cable damascus.

Peter, just let me know if you need more of either than you have already been sent and I will send you some more.

Alan, I sent you an email. Very interested in all those pieces you mentioned.

Indian George, I'd be interested in that Walrus tusk. I couldn't get away last weekend and this one doesn't look any better. But maybe next weekend if you're going to be making some damascus. Let me know when and I'll try to get out there. I figure it's probably a two hour drive or more. I really appreciate your generous offer!:)

Thanks Bruce!;)
