Mammoth Ivory

If anybody should know, you guys should. Has anyone used mammoth ivory on handgun grips and will they hold up? I would like to have a set consisting of a knife and handgun to match. Also, where can I find a custom maker that can also do the grips?

You might ask Tom Mayo. He has a photo on his site of a nice 1911 with ivory grips. Don't know if he would make them for anyone else but he should be able to fill you in on the durability and such...

I wouldn't recommend using Mammoth for gun grips. I make gun grips out of Moose on special order cases, only. The Mammoth is going to be very brittle (way worse than ivory) as Mammoth is petrified and no longer in it's natural state. Cutting and using for knife handles whether slab handled or hidden tang is fine, but there still is the possibility of breakage if dropped. If your interested go to my site at knifemann.com and go to the gun grip page. Hope this helps. knifeman
