I recently saw some awesome mammoth scales on Ebay. They were the type that is almost blue, very beautiful! What is a good price to pay? How hard are they to work with, since one is paying big $$ for them, you don't want to *uck it up!! How do you finish them? Thanks.

They work about like wood.
They will warp and move if your not careful.
Don't get it hot or wet.

Super glue it to fill cracks and holes if you want.

There are many threads on finishing this material if you look in the archives or Im sure Dan Gray has information on it.

Hello Darrel,

Just read your answer on mamatoh scales and it brought up a question in my mind. If heat and or wettness cause it to warp, could you use the same to straighten them out? Heat them and clamp to flat bar?

As stated above, do not get the ivory hot. It can not just warp but also cause the laminations that make up the ivory to separate (which in turn causes it to warp). Use fresh belts and quench the ivory on plates, such as aluminium. Go slow with this stuff and keep away from water. Chuck Leake in Alaska is a good source for mammoth and walrus (AK Ivory). Be careful on ebay but Chuck has done a lot of Ebay selling and I WOULD trust him.
