That's a great piece of ivory, ak! As far as suggestions, Bailey Bradshaw has always been one to enjoy making a knife around a particularly nice piece of ivory.

A really nice ladder pattern like that made by Brian Lyttle at www.lyttleknives.com would look great. So would a twist pattern.

That is a beautiful mammoth tooth. It should make a great handle.

Just wanted to edit this to have a record of this being my 3000th post.

I posted this question on your thread in The Gallery, but thought I should ask it here as well. Where do you get the mammoth tooth? I have not seen it available anywhere.

I have carved and sold fossilised ivory and bone for over 20 years here in Alaska. The mammoths had 5 sets of teeth in thier life the only ones that have roots like this are the second and third uppers. You can get North Sea teeth off Ebay but they are not good for knife handles.I slab up the lower plates for scales but they are tricky to use.I think my good friend Dan Westlind has some for sale that he got from me when he was up here moose hunting.I am attaching a photo of one of my tooth carvings.Beleave it or not I use a Wilton Square wheel to do my rough out.

Chuck,
I'd also suggest you consider Jonathen Loose. He welcomes commissions, enjoys working with natural handle materials, and makes some very striking damascus patterns. His waiting list isn't too long either.

Currently, he's making some very tight twist patterns that I think would compliment the mammoth tooth quite well. Here's an example of his work -

Check out his website for more info.

Very Neat Handle Material! I suggest Mike Norris Damascus. You can see some of his spectacular patterns at Snody's site www.snodyknives.com in the gallery. I'm sure someone has contact info for Norris. I'll leave the maker suggestions to the rest of them, but that tooth with Norris Damascus would make a prize of a knife!

Thanks for all the input.I get my material by traveling to remote Eskimo villiages in the summer.I sell mammoth ivory to a few dealers who do the shows.I recently went to St. Lawerence Island where most of the walrus ivory and ossik comes from.People have lived and hunted therefor over two thousand years. It is worth the extra cost.
