Gator bites dog, man stabs gator
From correspondents in Gainesville, Florida
August 27, 2004

A US man jumped in a pond and stabbed a 1.8m alligator with a pocket knife to force the reptile to release his dog from its jaws.

Matthew Goff, 29, said he was walking Sugar, a tan-coloured bloodhound/Shar-Pei mix, in a park when the attack occurred Wednesday evening. The unleashed dog wandered to the edge of the pond and the gator grabbed its head.

"I couldn't stand by and watch it happen and I had the pocketknife so I decided to try and save her," Mr Goff said.

The gator released Sugar when Goff stabbed the reptile in the eye. The dog then ran home, escaping with three teeth marks on and about her head. Goff had a few scratches.

A state trapper planned to kill the gator if it was found.

I heard that on the news. Good story. Great justification for always having a knife on your person.

1.8 M? Isnt that around 5 or 6 feet? Hmmmmmm He mustve really loved that dog! I dont know if I could watch my dog get tore up either, but id rather it be a mountain lion or something......JEEZ!

Did it say what the knife was?

The manufacturer would probably pay to advertise its 'gator proof'!!

Although it would be typical for it to be a far east POS...

No word on the type of knife. But, according to the Gainesville Sun, as of late Thursday, an alligator trapper was continuing to hunt for the wounded gator and the knife was still imbedded "in the gator's head."

Cant have been a knife knut, or a decent knife. theres no way any self respecting knife knut would leave a decent knife stuck in a gator :D

Especially such a SMALL gator! Sheesh! Must have been a tourist. That size would have made a nice belt, a couple of sheaths AND deep fried gator chunks. Yuuummmmm!!!!!!!!

He left his knife stuck in the gator? What a dumb-ass! He should have pulled it out and used it to make a belt and a nice pair of boots out of that dog-eating gator.:D.

Dumb dog... I hate small dogs... they deserve to be fed to gators...
poor gator only wanted a a snack and now he's got a chunk of steel in his eye...
what's the dog doing off a leash anyway?

I don't have an excuse for the dog being off a lead but if this bloodhound/Shar-Pei mix is anything like my pure bred bloodhound than it weighs over 120 lbs. My sister's Shar-pei mix weighs 80 lbs. If you think these are small dogs, try stepping into one of our house's when we're not around. :)

Just had a great vision.....

Imagine if this guy had followed through, killed the gator, slung it over his shoulder and headed out of the park towards his car..........and run into a police officer on the way!...................:-) :-)

please don't disturb me when I'm having one of my schizophrenic episodes...
:D

It turns out the gator, which has been caught by a trapper, was actually 7 feet long. Predictably, the follow-up story mentioned no specifics about the knife. Someone ought to look up that guy's number in Gainesville and call and ask him about it. I reckon someone around this forum could donate him a replacement user knife, right?

He would have been busted for poaching and of course PETA would have demanded a summory execution on behalf of the poor defenceless gator. The dog would have been sent off to rehab for enticing the gator by looking so tasty then euthanized because it couldn't stop being a dog. PETA would claim a great victory and have a picnic of tofu burgers and carrot juice.

That's just plain mean. Small dogs deserve to breathe as much as large dogs do. I've had both and I like both. If the dog was off its leash, that was the owner's doing, not the dog's. It drives me nuts when people trash talk small dogs like that. I was involved with someone who felt that way when he met me. Changed his mind after meeting my dog. :)
Edit: The dog in my avatar, I meant to say.

Knife, knife, knife.

It was probably a SAK!
