Man, This Feels Weird!

Well, this definitely feels weird. I guess I did not realize how long it has been since I have posted or been in the shop. But I finally got out of my 5 month “lack of motivation” phase. I had a local Charity contact me about donating an item to their raffle/auction. I figured if I couldn’t get off my duff for myself, then I better be able to do it for a good cause. Needless to say, I accepted.

The local charity is called: “Pursuing a Dream Foundation.” Their proceeds go to The National Wild Turkey Federation’s Wheelin’ Sportsmen Program. “The program was created by a merger between the Alabama-based Wheelin' Sportsmen of America and the NWTF. Wheelin' Sportsmen is the realization of both organizations' commitment to creating a national effort to provide the disabled with opportunities to get out and enjoy outdoor activities, such as hunting, fishing, bird watching and much more.”

Below is what I came up with. I am still waiting for the display case to come in. It should be nice, mahogany inlaid with walnut, with a little lock and key. Once that comes in, I need to install the foam and fabric and all is done.

Nothing real creative on my part, at least profile wise. I thought it best to stick with a good old standby for me. I tried to do a four bar twist in the blade, and I did, but she got a bit distorted from the amount of forging to shape I did. The pattern in the blade is not what I wanted, but I think it looks OK. I really wanted the pens and blade to match. What do you think of the blade pattern?

The knife and the top two pens are from the same 3/8 twisted billets of C1095 and 15N20. I started out with 8 individual bars of 68 layers each. 4 were used in the knife and 4 in the pens. I should have had enough for two knives, but I screwed up when forging the bars down to 1/4 and lost about half of my material. The bottom pen is C1095 and Pure Nickel Twisted Damascus that I had laying around from a previous project so I finished it out into a pen.

Well all, it was nice to get back into the shop again and hopefully it won’t be another 5 months before I get more done. Thanks for looking and as always, any feedback would be appreciated.

Oh yeah, the knife and one of the 4 bar pens is being donated to the Charity. The second 4 bar is going to the founder of the local charity and the bottom pen is going to be my new EDC :D

Hi Sean. Its good to see Ya back. You were missed! Nice gift to a worthy cause. Another wing has been added to your mansion in heaven.

Hey, that knife looks pretty familiar! (I got Sean's contribution to Knife In the Hat last year and it was a similar piece) Pens look awesome! Any problems with them oxidizing from being used, held, etc?

Yup, similar. ;) I "found" another one of this style already ground out when I was cleaning my basement. Couldn't remember making it until I gave it a quick test etch. And then it all came back to me, one of those pattern development deals that I wasn't happy with. It went back into the scrap pile. HeHeHe, one day maybe I will like it.

Here is Chiro's KITH knife he was talking about:

Similar to the one I just finished except the Charity one has no nickel (and four bars), and mokume pins instead of mosaic pins. Both have full tapered tangs and Beng Burl handles.

As far as the pens go, I usually clear coat them, but that will eventually start to separate from the pen barrels and show little white dots. I have thought about powder coating, but I talked to some professional powder coaters, and they said powder coat would do the smae thing as the clear coat.

So now I am going to just wax the barrels with Briwax and send "How to care for" instructions and a small supply of wax with each pen. I wish there was a better solution.

Well, I know the solution. Stainless steel damascus would be great, but I still need to build the frame for my hydraulic press. Then look out cause that will open up the world of canister welding for me. Maybe that will give me some motivation to get the press built and buy a little MIG welder. :D

I'd like to have one of your pens Sean but as soon as the wife sees it would
be the last time I'd see it :grumpy: nice work guy,, :)

Beautiful work Sean and for a grand cause!!!
Glad you're coming out of the dumpers and getting back into it!

You know one of these days I'm gonna have to try a pin, yours are awsome!

It's good to have you back and glad your back in the shop, I know how the funks can be.

Sean, we missed ya! That is some more of your really nice work, fella. Mighty nice! I thought you had won the lottery and moved away to some mountain top and was making knives just for the fun of it. Really.

Welcome back, Bubba! Nice pens and blades. I'm going to have to pick your brain some day about penmaking supplies (not that I need another diversion. I'm already hooked on muzzloaders... again). :D

Welcome Back! Nice knife and great pen's....... Got to admit it do make you feel good when you can donate something for a good cause.......
