Check out this site for tales of knife hunting wild hogs. Anyone here ever done this?

NOT ME! But, I was just reading a thread somewhere ...check the Camillus forum. I think a guy there was saying he just killed a boar with his new Becker combat. Here it is.

There is a thread on Camillus Forum about the new BK7 and First Blood where a Forumite talks about killing a wild Boar with a BK-7.

I believe that Will Fennel and Andy Prisco have both posted on this style of taking Wild Hogs.

There used to be a fine gentleman who went by the name Snickersnee here on the forums who would regularly hunt in this manner. I think he used to take wild hogs, as well as alligators down in Florida. He always had a few great stories.

I go to this restuarant near my home where they post many photographs and memorabilia from the early 20th century. One photo that really gets my attention is of an old hunter standing in a duck blind hunting with a sling shot.

I killed a songbird in flight when I was a kid. It was incredible luck. It only happened once. I always wonder how many shots made by this oldtimer put bird on the table.

Another fine name and a hell of a Knifemaker is Larry Harley. He makes hog hunting knives as well as guides hog hunts. Take a look at his website lonesomepineknives.com. His knives are pretty cool.

I've never attempted such a thing, but on the TV series "Survivor 2" ... yes, I actually watched that, no flames please... One of the contestants killed what appeared to be a wild boar using a knife and they put it right on prime time TV. He didn't have any hunting dogs to pin it first either. It was not a really big animal, but it had teeth and I thought it was an impressive act.

I actually tried this once. I was 16 and on Spring Break. My dad, cousin and I all headed down to TN. I had a Cold Steel Trailmaster and a .44 mag Smith and Wesson.

We had dogs and a dog handler, and off we went into the woods. This was the most terrifing experience of my life. Especially after the locals showed us their scars. Remember "Jaws" when they're in the boat, "I got that beat!" Well, that's how I felt.

Once we found the hog, and the dogs locked on to its snout and hindquarters, I went in for the kill. I was hopped up on adrenaline something fierce. I plunged the steely blade behind the creatures shoulderblade and.........NOTHING!!! That damn CS had to thick of a profile to puncture the hog hide and reach the vital organs. We were so close to the "bayed" hog that I had to pull my handgun and shoot him. Boy o boy did he make tasty sausage.

Next time, a sharper, thiner profile of a blade is in order.

WireEdge,Thats exactly what I am working on now.My nephew and premier knifetester hunts this way.He lives near Crystal River,Fl. and just killed a big one with one of my knives. But we talked afterwards and he suggested a longer, thinner profile for going between the ribs.It seems he was having a tough go on the ribs with the wider blade.I do think that he is just a tad crazy.Dave:)

Ok. This is from someone who knows nothing about what you fellas are talking about, so take it for what its worth (i.e. not much).
How about a kukri. Would it work?. Like I said, its just a suggestion.

it would work but so would a green garbage bag over its head held tightly
what u want is something thats as effecient as possiable
i,ve found the perscription to be 9 or 10 inches long 2 to 3 inches wide
wide kills better thna long
and 2 edeges kill 4 or 5 times better than one edge

Like I said, its just a suggestion.

Hi Larry,
Do you guys still use a spear for Boar hunting? I've seen one of your spears in a gun/knife shop in north GA. Looked to be mighty well made, wickedly effective and would put me as close as I would want to be to a feral hog!
Stay Safe,
Clyde

Speaking of wild boars, last night watching the Crocodile Hunter, he(Steve Irwin) had his dog go after one in which he had to jump in to separate them. It was a funny scene in which he ended up getting bitten by the boar. He was holding his dog to the side and was holding the boar by the mane. Not too smart. :D

Seems to me this would be a great way to "test" your fighting knife. If it could take down a hog I'm sure it could take down a two legged hog. Besides the CS Trailmaster has anyone else attemped this with good or bad results fron their fighter/survival knives.
Larry, has anyone shown up at your camp and insisted on using their own knife and and had less than spectactular results? Or hopefully better than excpected results?

Hunting big pigs with knives isn't as big a deal as some would make it out to be. In the area where I live it is the prefered method. The dogs find the pigs easily and the hunt is quiet (no noisy guns to let everyone else in the forrest know whats up). You can't drive around our town for more than 1/2 an hour without seeing a pickup with the dog cages on the back.
