this is the name of a new survival based show that is going to air on Nov 8th on the Discovery Channel. looks pretty interesting just thought i would give the heads up. very similiar to survivor man

I saw a preview of this on Discovery Channel last weekend. Bear Grylls was the gents name....

Anyway, if you are familiar and comfortable in the wilderness; then you will probably not find this show that informative. What I saw was just merely armchair survivalist entertainment for those TV addicted folks that dream of going outside, versus actually going outside.

My 2 cents....

**EDIT** Did some research just in case I was too critical of the show. http://community.discovery.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/8671928318/m/6831936338 Seems I wasn't the only one.

He really goes for it doesn't he? Too reckless for my taste. The object of survival is to do it without harming yourself. Not to mention, he really should learn to live with Nature, instead of trying to conquer it. Of course, they do have to keep the ratings up.

Funny thing is, my 6 year old daughter was watching it with me and she was asking me questions like "if he has a fire why is he eating a raw fish" , "that was dumb to jump off that cliff" or when the bear was nearby his shelter she asked me why didn't he make some noise to scare it off instead of sneaking out to see what was out there.

It's a shame a majority of the viewers are going to see this as "survival" training.

I think you nailed it the first time: fortunately, folks who get deeply into this probably aren't the type who will be most at risk for thinking this is correct information!

In other words, it won't hurt the ones who never go outside. The ones who go outside will already know better.

Interesting perspectives from your 6-year-old, btw! I saw the promo commercials for the first time yesterday evening, and my first thought was-- why the hell would he climb up an active waterfall when there are at least two easier paths within plain view?

Realizing this was a show that was putting drama above good advice, I decided I wouldn't be tuning in.

i think i'll watch for the same reasons i watched survivor man, so i can pick out the things i would do differently. i think that if you watch something with the knowledge that it is only for entertainment then its fine. and i think its fun to watch someone scramble through a remote jungle or desert i'll never have the chance to go to myself.

I'd like to get my hands on a few of his shows. I hear he knows his stuff and lives it.

I have a couple of seasons of Ray Mears videos here on my hard drive. Good stuff and I recommend them.

For those of you who may not know, there was a preview episode that aired on the 20th or 21st of October I think. In the episode Bear parachutes into the Rocky Mountains in September and has to survive and find his way to civilization with only the "clothes on his back". It was an obvious attempt to duplicate survivorman, but came off as being hollywood-ized, over dramatic, and staged. Here is my list of the obvious flaws:
1) They said parachute in with the clothes on his back. He is followed by a camera crew, so he ain't alone and he has a small packback. He is also wearing jeans and a cotton hoodie. Cotton is not a smart choice.

2) First day he builds a descent shelter and he just "happens" apon a rattlesnake which he kills and eats. He has no water! Should not eat until you can drink.

3) He makes a fire with a hand drill. He says it takes a long time and they show him doing it and suddenly he has hot coals under his bow. Plus all other fires he makes during the show take less than 5 minutes???Amazing!;)

4) First night he claims a bear is in his camp b/c of the snake entrails. So he decides to run off into the woods in the middle of the night to get away from the bear with the camera crew in tow and camera lights ablazing! Come on!

5) Skip ahead to morning...To escape from the phantom grizzly he jumps off a cliff into a river. Stupid

6) He decides to follow the river at this point. All his cotton clothes are dry??

7) Later on he decides to float down the river using his packback as a floatation device. You can see a life jacket under his cotton hoodie. Thought he only had the clothes on his back? By the way the water is supose to be 40 degrees. I'm in a survival situation and I want to get wet and cold? The camera shots are clearly from a raft. How did they know to bring a raft all the way into the woods to film this unscripted survival expert escape?:jerkit:

8) Day three...he finds an old campsite that has a couple of rusted out coffee cans. He uses these to boil water to drink. Only now does he mention how to procure water. IF you took the show at face value it would seem he has appearantly gone 3 days without a drink! What if you don't have an old campsite handy with containers to boil water in?

I'll stop there. THere is a lot of other stupid survival stuff he does. For my money, Les Stroud and Survivorman is a real survival show that shows real survival situations and real, safe, smart techniques. It is not fair to compare Man v Wild to the fine work Les Stroud does. Stroud does it all by himself. The real amazing part to survivorman.

Just my 2 cents worth. That Man v Wild really got under my skin. It came off as so fake and staged. Especially if you know anything about survival.
