on the TV show Man vs Wild, Bear carries a NATO water bottle & mug. My question is how does he carry it? It looks to me he uses paracord like sling, but di he tie it to the water bottle without it falling out of the metal mug?

Sb expect most responces to your post to be rude.

I don't know how Bear ties up his bottle and cup but it appears just to be a loop or two of p-cord. Maybe you could try several methods and post your pics. I prefer some sort of pouch so I can also carry purification tablets. I've had giardiasis and it wasn't pleasant. In jungle show Bear was puking at night probably because he drank bad water.

It looks like he ties paracord to the cup. The water bottle fits in the cup.

Edit: Removed rude comment.

I've been trying to figure out which knives he uses. I'm not conviced he's a knife guy in the least though.

Jack I think you are correct. Neither he nor Les Stroud are gear guys, at least it doesn't appear so. They just go to the wilderness and do their thing. I know Les plans his outings, I have the out takes DVD, but he concentrates more on his camera gear than his personal gear.

all I've seen Les use is a leatherman, I think you're right. It's funny with Les, you can tell when he's getting frustrated, he starts griping about the camera gear.

Les used a SAK in an early episode though I don't remember which one. Les has received alot of good natured kidding about his choice in knives. I haven't seen any season 2 episodes yet so I don't know if he has "improved" in his choice.

yeah the very very first episode he used a SAK. Either the 2nd or 3rd he was using a new gen leatherman and I've also seen him with an older gen leatherman. I have noticed when he's doing some sort of a crash or break down he carrys a leatherman, I can only assume for the wire cutting advantage.

I can see why he ties the bottle on rather than using an issue cover for it-- the "Pattern 58" bottle cover looks like a MOLLE SAW ammo pouch-- a big squarish pouch that proably weighs what the bottle and cup do. http://www.surplusandoutdoors.com/ishop/877/shopscr405.html

I like the idea of the British bottle/cup/cook kit, but it is expensive to buy in the US and is heavier than readily availably hiking gear. Crusader bottle is 8oz and carries a liter. For comparison, a one liter Nalgene is 6oz and costs ~$7 new.

It's too bad some of the companies like SnowPeak or MSR don't make integrated water/stove/mess kits. There are couple pots available that will fit a Nalgene but that's about it. Something with a 1 liter bottle and integrated plastic cup/bowl and a titanium pot would be great. Hang a spork off the side and go camping

The knives that I have seen identified from Man vs Wild are a Cold Steel Voyager and a Wenger locking blade with a clip point-- a Mountaineer? Considering what he does to the knives-- bashing them with rocks, I imagine he doesn't want to do that to one from his personal collection :)

that's one way to look at it. But another, if I'm in his possition and I'm relying on it. I want a darn good knife. One that is made from the hightest quality materials that has less of a chance of breaking when I smack it with a rock.

Regardless of quality, there's always a chance of a knife breaking when you hit it with rocks. I don't know why he didn't just use another branch.

I have carried a 58 pattern water bottle and aluminum mug for over 20 years and I have to admit they are pretty much bomb proof. I recently purchased a new steel cup from BCB and like it even better. Along with the cup I ordered the matching solid fuel stove. That is a great combination for 3 day treks and I can highly recommend it. This newer cup can use a hanger so it can be suspended over a fire. It works OK but isn't great. For "normal" backpacking I carry a Vargo 700mL titanium cup and Nalgenes. I still like the (very heavy) Swedish Svea/Trangia militray surplus mess kits the best though you can't beat a boy scout messkit if you are going to cook your food rather than just boil water.

I have read here where people say they "beat the crap" out of their knife and it never fails. I have never done that to any knife of mine. I just don't get it. And while some can beat on their knife with a rock or stick in the soil between tasks that just raises my hackles. Most of those guys I'm sure have more experience than I do but it still bugs me (and my son) to no end.

He ties them to the end of his joint and the ensuing clammer keeps the bears away.

His junk, willie, unit, johnson, sausage, winky, tallywhacker, ect.

I'd provide more but this isn't W&C...

Mike

I wouldn't suggest watching Idiot vs. Wild unless you are looking for things NOT TO DO in the wild.

BTW, he isn't SAS. He tried to become reserve SAS and (surprise) nearly killed himself prior to completing training. That's why his show says he "served with special operations".

Hi survivalboy. From what i have seen on the show the paracord is tied to the handles . Duct tape wrapped around handles cup rim onto bottle holding it in.
