Managing Long Pack Straps

My largest pack, a Gregory Keeler, has two straps on the bottom that are quite long. I have used this extra length from time to time to lash extra gear onto the pack. Most of the time though, I've tied them up.

I know a lot of folks simply use duct tape. Others like those newfangled ITW Web Dominator strap keepers. I must admit I like the looks of the Web Dominator, but right now, I'm just using simple velcro strapping (cable straps) to tame the bottom straps on my pack.

What do you folks like to use?

Here are some pics of my current solution...

Here's a pic of the Web Dominator BTW...

I've used pieces of bicycle inner tube for a couple of decades, and more recently, the little velcro zip tie thingies that come in rolls, and Mystery Ranch's "web keepers".
Going to order some of those ITW Web Dominators as soon as I find some foliage ones in stock where I can order some other stuff, too. That looks like the ticket:thumbup:

I was buying some stuff from somewhere and saw those
web dominators and bought some.
I had other uses in mind than the intended purpose.

I attached them to some of the Molle webbing on
some of my gear. Tied some of that elastic shock cord
on them in various lengths and use them to
strap extra gear on my packs.

I really like the fact that I can put my light jacket or
raincoat/shirt on my pack, yet it is very easy to get to
if I need it.
Having an easy way to carry/store the jacket or shirt
has made a difference in how I hike.
I no longer have a problems taking off my shirt or jacket
if I start to heat up because I know its easy to hang on my pack.

This is just one use.
I strap a lot of different compressible type items with this method.
Stuff that I either need quick access to,or stuff
that I pick up along the way.
Its not the most secure way of carrying items,
but I found no issues in
the places I have been going lately.

i use the double sided velcro.. it works great... Camelbak makes all of their pack's with built in velcro to manage excess starp length..

Cut off the excess length and save weight!

There is a couple reasons I don't do this. First if I ever want to sell the gear it becomes an issue. Secondly if you need to change the strap length because of adding or removing armor or jackets this will become a problem.

Yeah, like I said, sometimes I use the straps, and so I like having the option.

I've looked for ways to cut excess weight, but I'm not a gram Nazi yet.

You know it's bad when you start shaving your pubic hair to cut down on tenths of ounces. :p :D

Here's a question. The straps I show above are 3/4" wide straps. Would the Web Dominators work okay with that width?

They are designed for 1" straps, so they may not lay exactly flat in the dominator, but I don't see why it wouldn't work.

I use medic tape (that elastic stuff that sticks to itself). But those web thingys just gave me an idea. Am I correct in that the cord is elastic?

I just ordered 10 black and 10 foliage from Supply Captain. They sell the Web Dominators with just a length of shock cord that you cut to your own specs. Price seemed good too.

I like the web dominator thing, cool link
