This is the small shrine of Manakamana and here is my own version of her story (Hindu religious scholars forgiveness asked and corrections welcome).
Manakamana was a young princess who married a handsome young man who died quite unexpectedly and prematurely. As a devout Hindu wife it was expected of her to jump into the husband's cremation fire and die also. She did not want to face this end so she prayed and her prayers were so devout and fervent that God transformed her into a goddess. As the goddess, Manakamana, it is her duty to occupy this shrine and to bestow one wish to any who seek her blessing. On weekends and Hindu religious holidays there is a waiting line of generally 4 to 6 hours to enter the shrine so I am told. Lucky for us we visited on an offday and our wait was less than an hour.
And, yes, my wish was granted.
What has this to do with khukuris? You guessed it again!
