Anyone else catch the episode tonight about lion attacks? One part of it centered on a story of a guy in Africa who was attacked by a lioness in his cabin or hut, and managed to kill it with his hunting knife. I tried my best to see the knife -- it appeared to be about a 6" clip point blade, single brass guard, and leather washer handle with brass pommel. Not too different from an some older Randall's I've seen.
In any casethe story went like this: He saw the lioness studying him before the attack, and he managed to get ahold of his knife, which was the only weapon within reach. When the lioness attacked, he had the knife in reverse grip and he stabbed it in the back. The lion mauled him in the chest, shoulder and face with it's claws, then got ahold of his head in it's jaws. The guy had the presence of mind to realize that his only hope was to stab it in the heart, and he had a clear shot at the chest. It took him three tries before the knife wasn't stopped by the lions rib cage. Once the knife went in, he worked it around to scramble the internal tissues. The lion at this point let go and turned to leave out a window, but was dead before it got there.
There were photos of him afte the attack (in the hospital) and a newspaper story, so I got the impression this was pretty well documented. Evidently the lioness was older, past her prime, had worn down teeth, and but for this the guy probably wouldn't have had a prayer. Still, an amazing story, assuming it's for the most part true.
