About 25 years or so, I bought a Butterfly knife called a Manila Folder. It has Brass handles, and is marked "Taylor/Seto, Surgical, Japan."

Is this knife worth anything from a collectors point of view?

Nah, it's a piece of crap, just send it to me and I'll dispose of it properly, I'll pay the postage.

JUST KIDDING!!!!

If Taylor still made them (which is wierd cause they still might be, ask JohnR7 for the story) then we all would buy several of them. I don't know about how much someone would pay for them but some would pay a lot (IMO). I think they retailed for about $40 15-20 years ago, a great price for what I've heard about them.

Depends on variables such as condition, latch or blade damage etc. NIB its worth at least a bill($100). A great knife.

On 11-8-00 Seto of Japan informed me: "As you indicated, I'm the company supplied Balisong Knives to
Taylor, Parker or Frost in the past. They are still fine buyers."

As far as I know, no one is importing Japan made butterfly knives right now. But Seto is still interested in making them. Anyone got $15,000 we can put in a order for a few

Thanx everyone for the replies... I have a friend that is wanting a Butterfly to carry cause they look "Cool"! I was thinking about selling him mine, but if it would be worth more in a collection than in use as a utility knife, I would rather sell/trade it to a collector and get him a user knife...

Any more input?

Yes, there are a lot of people who want that knife, and very few of them available. It would be a great disservice to the collectors to destroy it, and not to keep it in top collectable value.

If you want a knife you can kick around with, get a $12 Taiwan with a Rostfrei blade in it. That should do him fine. Thanks, JohnR7 www.Balisong.com

JohnR7: Thanx... Question, I think he wants a "User" knife, Robbie installs custom Flooring & wants a cool lookin' knife, but wants a good tool too. Does the Taiwan/Rostfrei fit this bill, or should I look for a little better? I have a pretty good reputation among knife Knuts here in Greenville for providing quality knives. I want to provide him with a good blade that will take/hold an edge (My standard,I sharpen for a paying hobby), that just happens to be in the Butterfly/Balisong configuration (his standard) Hope I don't sound like too much of an idiot, I'm just not Balisong Literate!

Thanx again,

IMHO, if you are seeking a good user, you might as well step up to a Benchmade 42. It's the top of the line in production right now, and will hold up to anything you throw at it. You might be able to find some older, used BM models out there that would also be good user bali's.
I suppose that you could pick up a top end jag and redo the pins, but if you ever sit it beside a 42 and play with it, it just isn't the same, hell it's not even in the same league if you ask me.

Do Not buy a Jag! If your word is at stake go for the BM 42! Yes, there are older models out there but they fall under the collector category. C=$ In the Balisong world it seems to be one extreme or the other! To be sure...Put your money on a Benchmade!

HMF's are out there but I have yet to test the edge! These can also be found on JohnR7's website as well as Sniperboy's. Good competition going on there according to value!

Kind regards,

Save the manila folder. Tell him to get the 42. Don't tell him to get a FHM if he's going to use it. They look too nice to use. And get yourself a 42 as well

What are the rest of his tools? If he has Black and Decker, then sell him a Bear, if he has the best, then sell him a Benchmade. If he uses Taiwan, then sell him a Jaguar. At least then, what he gets, will be fairly consistant with all the other tools he is using. For me, if I could go back and do it all over again, I would buy the best. In the long run, they do not cost anymore, because they last a lot longer. So you get the benifit of getting the job done faster because you do not have to screw around with compromise inaccurate tools. The butterfly is a good folding tool, because it gives you the strength and the reach of a fixed bladed tool. With the added benifit of being a very fun item to use and work with.
