Hey everyone, I just recently recieved the Spyderco Manix2 S30V Hollow ground, with the ball lock.. I am kind of worried about the cage that allows you to disengage the lock breaking.. I wouldnt be able to unlock the blade without a new plastic thing/cage... So im wondering if anyone knows of a place or someone who would make steel/aluminum versions of the cage thingy? Or any advice on how to keep it from breaking... Thank you.
Dustyn

Looking for: Spyderco Captain, Dodo, Poliwog, "Q"...

Have not seen any aftermarket replacements yet. Also I wouldn't worry about the cage breaking.

and even on the off chance that it did break, send it back to Spyderco, they will fix it or replace it.

Spyderco have sold thousands of these and I have yet to hear of one breaking. I EDC a Krein re-grind 154CM Manix with the same set up..... Never a problem.

With respect don't worry about what might never happen. The chance of having a problem is so remote.........Go out and enjoy it.

The only force being exerted on the cage is you pulling back on it. It ain't gonna break.

I wouldn't worry about it breaking, either.

I'd be more worried about mucking it up with an ill-fitting replacement and being stuck with it, since that would have voided the warranty.

As for advice on how to keep it from breaking (really?), just don't do anything stupid like baton with it and you should be fine. I have literally chopped, pried, stabbed, and scraped with several of them and haven't had any problems with the lock whatsoever.

Thanks for all the replies everyone, i was just a little skeptical about it, this Manix is one beast of a knife, i like it better than my PM2 honestly... Another question i have is what paid membership will allow me to buy and exchange knives here on bladeforums.com?

The minimum is a gold membership at $25 a year.

i think it may be difficult to break the actual polymer ball, but i own a manix with a broken spring guide pin part of the ball. bought this second hand on ebay(without mention of break) so don't know how it occurred.

if you can see in pic the guide pin is broken just after the coil. doesn't effect opening although i assume the ball has more wiggle than perfect example. honestly don't carry it often enough to monitor/encourage further damage but plan to ship to spyderco in the future for repair

Ten bucks says it was improper disassembly/reassembly by the previous owner. Want to avoid breakage? Don't take it apart.

The Manix 2 CF S90V is my EDC knife most of the time. It is one smooth, sharp and incredibly well designed knife. The locking mechanism is super strong and I doubt that it'll ever break.

I like it as much as the two Benchmade Axis lock knives I have left in my possession, the 705 and the 710 M2. In fact, I've moved away from Benchmades to the higher quality Spydercos the last four years and have not looked back.

The 'cage-ball' lock from Spyderco is... one excellent design!

I have one that broke and spyderco sent a new cage for the ball bearing... i think that if you put side pressure on the poly cage, you can break the stem the holds the spring in place. this was the case for me i believe. i probably laid or sat on it while it was in my pocket just right... for the most part spyderco was pretty cool in sending me a replacement part... although i would buy an after market metal cage if i ever found one...

If it would fit my Manix 2 xl and be reasonably priced I'd buy one. Only part of the knife
I ever had doubts about. It's never been an issue so far.

Overall, I love it. Great knife.
