Manix 2 decision

Trying to decide between 1 of two Manix 2 models for a work knife.

The FRCP is one that I`m looking at, I do not own any model with the thin looking paper clip, is it as strong as the regular clip ?

My other choice is the Black G-10, both are S30V.
I see that the FRCP is lighter and also I`m not concerned about what color it will be.

To those that have both or owned both, please weigh in. Or anyone that has 1 or the other or just has an opinion.
Thanks.

They’re both going to stand up to the task, however one thing that sucks with the FRCP version is that they’re riveted together so they’re non-serviceable.

got both....if I had to choose one of em for work I'd go with the g10....my reasons would be s30v will have better edge retention than bd1n and if its dropped the g10 will take the hit better than frcp...also if the clip is a concern, if snagged the paperclip can bend....if you have an office job then the lightweight will be fine

I have a few. The G-10 version has proud liners (liners that stick out past the scales) which are ground into a series of somewhat rounded points called jimping. Maybe I'm just a wuss, but I found all those teeth chewing on my hand extemely uncomfortable, to the point I took a belt sander to it and ground them off. I don't feel that I should have to wear gloves to protect myself from the handle of the tool I'm using, so I abandoned the G-10 series.

The lightweight is much more comfortable to use and much lighter to carry. If you need more edge retention, it is available in S110V and Maxamet, either of which will smoke S30V in that department. Yes, the handle is pinned together, but there is no real need to take it apart, only that urge some people have to disassemble everything they own.

What kind of work? I do landscaping, the manix 2 is a great knife. I really appreciate the ability to take down the knife and clean it. As a work knife, depending the job, a cleaning may be necessary.

I have the black g10 dlc s30v version. Its held up really well to constant use and slight abuse.

I would go with g10 version.
Feels solid and can take care of whatever you throw at it.

( I have neither, I have a g10 exclusive manix)

I had both versions in S110 and they are both great knives. I actually prefer the wire clip to the more traditional hourglass clip. But after handling both knives, I decided to return the FRCP version. The G10 version is just more substantial and that’s what I prefer. And actually, the only FRN version I have left is a Stretch in ZDP189.

And like Jack said, if edge retention is important, then moving up in steels from the S30 is also advisable.

If you mean usual, common FRCP Manix 2 in translucent blue or black, then the steel will probably be BD1N, not S30V.

I have this one, in translucent blue. Even though it's "just fancy plastic" it still feels sturdy. Although, I think the hardness of the FRCP coupled with the sharp-ish corners could make it "feel" like cheap plastic to some people.

As for the wire clip; I've noticed I use the clip a bit for additional purchase when closing it. My ring finger & pinky grip it a little. During this, I can feel it flex a little. I tend to be paranoid and wonder if doing that over months/years might fatigue/break it over time, or work it loose. But most likely it will be fine, but I do feel a little flex there.

Overall I like it very much and am glad I got it. That said, I did just order the G-10 version in S30V last week; so I should be able to compare them soon.

If you're really going to use it as a work knife, then surely the G-10 version will be sturdier and with better steel, for only about $20.00 more. Of course it will be heavier; but if you're wearing real pants you probably won't notice much of a difference. By "real pants" I mean jeans, cargo pants, or even chinos; not basketball shorts or sweatpants that rely on an elastic waistband.

I’ve got a DLT exclusive red g10 20cv model I’m getting ready to list on the exchange for less then either of those models. If you are interested email me and I will give you first dibs at it.

Manix 2 is my favorite knife in Spyderco lineup. This is a very robust folder and personally I would pick the G10 version since it is more sturdy and if necessary easier to maintain and repair. Spyderco recently re-released Manix 2 with Earth Brown G10 scales and M390 blade steel, I have one of those and it is a fantastic knife! Manix 2 is a great knife and you will definitely like it no matter which version you pick! Good luck buddy!!!

After doing some more looking and reading as well as you`re input, I have made a decision.
Manix 2 Dark Blue FRCP CPM-S110V has been ordered, it will feel right at home sitting next to the Para 3 in S110V.
Thanks for all the input guys.

That is a good choice. I prefer the LW to the G10, though I admit the brown G10 M390 is very tempting. As far as the FRCP goes, Sal has said it is stronger than FRN. There was one guy that dropped his from the top of a tower while working and when he got down and retrieved it, the handle had no damage. G10 or other materials would have chipped badly or broken completely.

I'd go FRCP all day. The clip really kills me on the g10 models. I never could find a comfortable way to hold it, despite really wanting to like the 52100 model.

I also just really love the translucent scales. I'm a little upset that the more recent frcp models have all been totally opaque. @Sal Glesser what gives? :D

I had both, sold the G-10 and still have the FRCP. I don't feel that it's not enough knife, nor do I concern myself with the pinned construction. My first Spydercos were pinned and before that my EDC was a Buck 112. I managed fine all that time without taking my knives apart. Still do.

I would take either, but I'm more hesitant with the FRCP because of the lack of screws. I'm not one to strip down my knife unless it needed it, but I like having the option to

FRCP is the way to go. It is super strong stuff and those knives have the addition of a metal liner around the pivot. I think the blade would snap before the handle gave way. Sal Glesser said that FRCP surprised him as to how very strong it is, much stronger than FRN. At 3 oz for that large a knife, it is a done deal for me. I have 1 G10 that never gets carried anymore, and 3 FRCP that get used.

Had the Manix 2 for 6 days and pivot screw is missing, I have only opened about 20 times, I have never had to send a knife back and prefer not to but I do not have the part that is missing. I have no idea when or where it came out.

Sal, will you please direct me as to what I need to do, should I send it back to Spyderco ? Send it to SMKW where I bought it or can you send me the part ?
Thx
