Manix 2, FFG production in the future?

So I've had my eye on the Manix 2 since I first got word of it around bladeforums, but the blade grind has kept me from getting one. I missed out on the S90V run, didn't like the blue G10 on the S30V run, and I'm trying to get a CTS-HXP one from the 2nd wave that's said to ship sometime this summer.

So I'm wondering if Spyderco has any plans on releasing a FFG Manix 2 in their regular production of the knife or are they only going to offer sprint/limited runs in FFG?

You can get the hollow grind converted into a FFG quite easily. Are you opposed to FFG for some reason?

I don't think there has been any official word whether there will be a FFG regular production version of the Manix. I think most users who want a hard-use folder like the aesthetics of a hollow grind and the additional strength.

I agree, however, that I am interested to see a FFG production model. I can get a regular Manix and send it to Tom Krein but then the total cost, IMO, is just too high. I might as well just save up for a Para 2 or future CBBL model.

Thanks for the info, and those are my thoughts exactly. I'm aware of Tom Krein and that I can make the current production manix 2 the way I want by sending it to the right people, but the added costs aren't worth it imo. I'd rather see a normal production FFG version instead of having to beat all the super fans and people that'll just flip the limited runs for a quick buck.

It'd be nice to get the official FYI from Sal.

You should definitely get the Carpenter Manix 2. I got mine this week. It is sooo nice. Sharpest Spydie out of the box and that's a big statement.

I'd say it depends on the relative sales of the standard and Sprint versions. We know the FFG Sprints are selling well. I'd guess if the hollow ground production version is doing as well as they'd hoped it would, or better, then things will continue as they are. In which case, am sure there will be more Sprints. But if sales on the production version are sluggish, then they might switch it to FFG.

I think the hollow ground version is well suited for hard use but the narrow grind makes the knife a poor slicer when the entire blade has to push through the medium. For me, the FFG versions are plenty tough enough and more versatile.
I like the handle design and lock so much that the FFG versions are probably my favorite of all Spyderco folders.

I like the way a full flat grind slices also but I don't like splinter picker tips, they are too easy to break. They also draw blood with the slightest prick. I can deal with a hollow grind if it means a stronger tip. I suppose it depends on what the knife is being used for that would determine which is better. I think it's current configuration (regular Manix 2) is more suited for hard use and gross motor movements.

Skeleton handles are not a big deal for me either. Keeping the handles solid probably helps keep the cost down. In it's current state the regular production Manix 2 is not heavy anyway. If you compare it to the regular Manix it's a lightweight. Despite the above even the lightest stuff can be felt when work gets hard and you are carrying it all the time. In reality though the tiny weight increase is unlikely to make much of a difference.

I have the say the Manix 2 is a whole lot of knife for the money.

Oh boy Deacon, I hope Sal reads this one, haha.

i hope they make them like the sprint runs, FFG and skeltonized, and for the sprints they can just use different steels :D

Could you imagine a Manix 2 FFG, skeletonized, S90V with some of that Gayle Bradley/Sage Walker Lock carbon fiber for the scales? Hell, even CTS-XHP or good old S30V with that scale material would be a knife I wouldn't mind trying.

I'd love to see a FFG Manix 2 with grey and black 2 tone G10, and a Takefu Damascus steel blade. However, this will probably not happen as it's a Japanese steel and the cost of bringing it here would make the knife cost super bucks.

I'm trying to get a CTS-HXP one from the 2nd wave that's said to ship sometime this summer.

Did a search on this forum to check on the CTS-HXP Manix 2, specifically whether there will be another offering later this year but did not find a confirmation. Will there be another release?

Depends on what you mean. There will be a total of 1k units made. I believe, based on what Sal has posted, that these are being made in two production runs. It is possible that the second production run has not yet shipped to dealers. On the other hand, some dealers, llike KCI, have stopped taking pre-orders/backorders due to uncertainty about what they will ultimatey receive.

Thanks for clarifying. Appreciate the info.

Saw your other post - that's a fair price on a fabulous knife. You will not be disappointed and you will be glad you locked it in now.

Hi AKnife,

At this time, regular production will be with hollow ground blades in 154Cm with full liners.

Most Sprints will be in Full Flat grind with skeletonized liners and different handles.

But with the many colors being asked for and the "exclusive" versions committed, there should be quite a variety, at least for the next year or so.

I saw a pink G-10 Manix2 being assembled last week.
