Manix 2 G-10 Spring With Clear Buttons Still Too Stiff After 6 Months !?

The XL with black buttons that I bought less than a month ago has broken in nicely now. But the smaller Manix 2 G-10 is still very stiff to disengage. It is actually tearing up my finger and thumb...

Does anyone know a remedy for this? Or is this just a case of a stronger spring (clear buttons) in the Manix 2 G-10 than the Manix 2 XL (black buttons) ?

Thanks in advance...

In my experience the lock usually comes pretty stiff from factory and the more you use it the easier it will get.

Well, I've opened it a lot but it ain't getting any easier. The XL, on the other hand, has become much easier to open in less than the month that I've owned it...

I would ask how are you unlock the knife. Many try and unlock it as if it was an Axis lock. The way your hand has to be is not a natural movement (meaning something you do every day naturally). You must pinch the composite cage and pull it back with your thumb and index finger. As this movement is not a normal everyday thing, then you need to strengthen the muscles in your hand. I can't speak to the string tension, I haven't seen you knife and cannot compare it to any I own. I'd imagine they are pretty much all the same, or should be anyway. Keeping the knife open at a 90 degree angle isn't going to do much of anything, other than keep your knife open at a 90 degree angle. It's just part of the design of that knife I guess. Good Luck.

I have both a G-10 and a FRCP handled Manix2.. The FRCP handled is real easy and smooth and the G-10 is alot stiffer.. John

I always use the thumb forefinger to close my clear cage Manix 2 G-10.

BTW, black vs clear....they are the same in strength and durability. Sal said going to black was just a aesthetic change. People see the clear as inferior, where the black is exactly the same material with a black color added.

When I originally got my Manix 2 (standard model not lightweight) I had to use the thumb and index finger method. I can do it with just my thumb now. However I don't know if the spring eased up over time or if it's because I eventually picked up rock climbing.

That is how I close the knife. It is a movement within the hand that is not natural. It takes a while to train the muscles in the hand to manipulate the lock effectively. Nothing out of this world, rather just a new learning experience.
I thought they changed the composition of the cage which is my it is black. I remember reading reports of the clear cage breaking on a couple of knives, it was not a wide spread issue that I can recall, but I did see some posts with broken cages. I thought the black composite was possibly a different formulation.

Thanks for responding RevDevil (twice !), jmh33, Screwdriver, and Locust. I appreciate the advice. Very kind of you all...

The XL has really broken in nicely and therefore I really enjoy carrying it. However, the regular/smaller G-10 Manix 2 is still stiff like the day that I acquired it. I really think that it has a much stiffer spring which is the culprit. It is a lot harder to pull back on the clear tabs, so my finger is getting torn up. LOL. I may just have to send it in to Spyderco...

If the lock is stiffer than you think it ought to be and that stiffness is reducing your enjoyment of the knife you might as well contact W&R and let them evaluate it. It doesn't sound like you'll miss the knife much while it is gone as things stand so there isn't much of a downside to a round trip to the manufacturer. You might even get some satisfaction. :)
