This may just be a complete outlier, but last night I went to close my Manix 2 and the plastic cage that houses the ball bearing broke completely in half! It was pretty interesting because the ball stayed in place so the blade wouldn't close and I had to force it out (seems the knife is safe if the cage breaks).

The knife hasn't been used much, but was an OD green CTS-XHP Manix so a bit older. Has anyone else ever had this happen? I am curious if anyone makes aftermarket cages for the Manix 2 that are metal? I don't see this a huge problem, as anything will break eventually, but I wouldn't mind something more durable.

A while back I saw that someone made an Aluminum version. I am not sure if there would be galling between the two dissimilar metals and premature wear, but it might be an option.

Wouldn't/shouldn't Spyderco fix this under warranty? Especially since I seem to remember that the issue was rectified with a later updated model...

Colin.p is right, should be covered under warranty; I had the same issue with an older S90V Manix and managed to locate a newer beater BD1 at the Seconds sale which I cannabilized for the clear cage and pivot+screws... give ‘em a call :)

Thanks guys. I did send in it, knowing Spydero would fix it, however, I was not aware they updated the plastic, so that is good to hear. Sounds like issue is solved. Spydero always comes through.

Yes send it in and they will replace it.

I initially misread the thread and thought he broke the BEARING...now that would be something!

I always wondered what would happen if that plastic piece would break. I think that's the weak point on the Manix, not weak as in a bad thing, mind you, I just mean the spot I'd expect to fail first. It's good to know Spyderco is willing fix it if it does snap on you.

Spyderco's warranty department is top notch for sure! Took them 13 days(including the shipping) to get my Domino back in my pocket.

My experience has been the same. I've used their warranty a few times in the past and it is always quick and they are extremely friendly. Almost all my folders are Spyderco, and that is one of the main reasons.

If it split on its own like you said.

Contact them and see what they say.

The cage is only there to make the lock easier to pull on the ball bearing. The cage has noneffect on the BBs lock to keep the blade lockex open.

There are Spydies that have a BB lock with no cage, such as the QBall and D'allara.
