Is it me , or is the spring in the blade lock release very stiff ? will it lighten up with use ? It is not anywhere as smooth and easy to use as the Axis lock on a Benchmade. I like the knife, fits the hand well, seems over built, solid, is thin, and the g-10 gives it a good feel. What USA made spyderco is similar with a liner lock ?

I love both my manix 2 xl and regular manix 2. I put a drop of oil on the spring and just open/close like crazy. I find it just as easy as the axis lock. I prefer my manix to any BM and even my PM2. The XL is my new favorite knife...

Thanks for the reply's. I might try a tad of engine assembly lube on it { red lube of love }
I wanted the pm2, but was unable to find it locally, and i needed instant satisfaction, hence the manix 2. I like the knife, has a great feel, just need to get used to the ball lock mechanism i guess. Just used to a liner lock. This is my second Spyderco, my first was a pro grip i think they called it, tuff little package in a low cost folder. I leave that one in the center console of the truck.
Cheers Gentleman.

I absolutely love eveything abou the Manix 2 xl, except the pocket clip....I wish it rode lower in the pocket! The thing is super smooth (blows my old Bradley Alias out of the water), locks up tight, and feels great no matter how you hold it. I too have some issues with the lock spring being stiff, i just keep playing with it. Not sure if i've just gotten used to it or if in fact it has loosened up but i can work it with either the thumb or index finger only now.

I would like to see it ride a bit lower as well, but all in all, it is a well built knife that has a great sturdy feel.

I agree and am hoping that it will lighten up with use as well. Just got mine in today and the spring tension was highly noticeable.

I added a drop of silicone lubricant to the area and it helped a little, but not much. The issue is the spring itself and oil won't make the spring less strong. Part of the issue is that I have problems grabbing and pulling on the lock one-handed. I think that if I had either smaller or larger hands that I could grasp the lock easier but my hands are just the wrong size and grabbing the lock is awkward. If I hold the knife in one hand and pull on the lock with the other - no problem at all.

That said - I love the knife! The size is great, super design, comfortable, very sharp out of the box. I like it much better than my digicamo military. The only other issue that I have is really trivial, but I got the black/black g10 version and the rough texture of the handle rubs skin cells off of my hand, discoloring (temporarily) the handle. You can see lighter places where my hand comes in contact with it. Like I said, trivial. The rough texture that causes that is also what allows the knife to sit so comfortably in my hand, so some give and take. Probably not an issue with a lighter or different color.

Bottom line - great knife. I'm loving it so far. :)

I found it to be stiffer, but then again I like that. I don't like knives I worry about closing while being used, and the manix is a good secure lock in my experience.

For me, I found that if I put my forefinger and my thumb on opposite sides of the lock, and the butt of the knife in the palm of my hand, i can pull back and just let the blade fall into the handle.

The spring is a bit tougher, but it also won't break like the omega springs in an Axis lock. Just keep using it, you'll get used to it and it will break in.

Give it a week or two. My first Manix 2 was extremely stiff out of the box, and it didn't take long to make my fingers sore. The free floating ball has to break in its own path on the steel it rubs against when disengaged. I would suggest leaving the blade open and holding the knife upside down, while repetitively pulling the lock back and forth. Only took me a day or two to break in my second manix with that technique. :D

Dragging this thread up from the dead to agree with Paul's assessment. I've been using my Manix2 XL regularly and often (partly because I love the knife and partly to see if the lock will break in a little better) in the slightly less than 2 weeks that I have had it. I can now close the kife one-handed, something that was impossible just a few days ago. So Paul is spot-on. The ball does have to break in a path and will gradually become easier to use.

So, if you get one of these knives, just give it some time and some use and the lock will improve.
Just a bit of additional feedback on the issue. :)

update.
been using the manix 2 for a bit now, the ball lock has settled in and is much easier to use now. overall i am happy with the knife. descent bang for the buck in a USA spyderco.
