Hi i just got a used spyderco manix 2 LW SPY27, and it is so hard to pull the unlock button down. it works perfectly fine yes, but after maybe 5 times doing it my index finger and thumb gets sore from the pressure im applying whenever i unlock it. is there a way to loosen it up? and what is the proper way to clean it?

That's screwed construction I believe?
There are a few suppliers for weaker springs, found a few on the Bay... One seller has a light and medium spring kit with a ceramic ball for a good price, maybe that'd do the trick?

How "used" is it? Mine took about 6 weeks to loosen up and become smooth and easier to use, and over more time and use got even better. It will never be as easy as an axis type lock, but it's a stronger more reliable lock in my opinion. 9 years and it's still going strong.

unfortunately it is riveted.

With pinned construction there is not much you can do. However, I was under the impression that the lw was screw construction.

I have largish, strong hands, so I can see where it might be difficult if you have smaller hands. As I mentioned, it's nothing like an axis lock.

For the ones that can be disassembled, I've heard of people clipping a ring off of the coil spring to make it easier to open. If this is not an option, I would sell it.

The LW Spy-27 ones I see on knifecenter are screw construction.

The newest lightweights have gone to screw construction, but the older ones are all riveted.

You can blame me for the strong spring. Since it is tip up only, I convinced Spyderco that a weak spring was a bad idea. It's what holds the blade shut as well as locking it open. Tip up plus weak spring is a recipe for "opens in pocket".

i mean it's good to have a strong spring. but i don't know if mine is the normal strong. i feel like mines extra strong lol. i'll try to clean it and follow some tips they said.

Maybe toughen up? Donno.

I wouldn't weaken the spring by cutting a coil away like some suggest then again I wouldn't like to loose a digit. Toughen up like others have suggested.

Maybe try sticking a wooden dowels in the lock,it might get the spring to compress a bit.

You can search for
"Soften Manix 2 spring" and buy this kit
or of you have some drill bits. Find one that fits snug.

Leave it in over night or longer. It will soften the pull
