Manix 2 - which one?

I think the Manix 2 is next on my Spyderco wish list. I'm a big fan of the BM Axis lock and SOG Arc lock so I should give the Spyderco take on this design a try. But I'm having trouble narrowing it down - there are a lot of options, many of which are out of stock or discontinued at this point.

I'm tempted by the translucent blue model, because it's unique, and the price is certainly right. But I don't know - generally I'm not a fan of linerless knives. I know they have a weight advantage but I always feel like I've got a toy in my hand. It just gives a cheap feel that I typically don't enjoy. Admittedly I haven't given the Spyderco FRN a try, mostly because I think they are ugly. But the FRN scales on the Manix 2 are less offensive - I guess I like the logo they molded in...maybe I should try to get over this prejudice?

But I do like the idea of the G10 version. However it's not in stock anywhere (reputable, at least - if you know of one please send email) for a decent price. However, I'm really not a fan of the clear plastic lock cage. I prefer the models with the black lock cage. Does anybody know if the Blue FRN with SV110 has metal liners or not? The grey G10 sprint run is cool but not sure I'm willing to drop that kind of coin for this particular knife...even if I could find one in stock somewhere.

The XL version is probably too XL for me to EDC. So I think that one is probably out of the running at this point.

Also, any comments about the Sage 3? Does it have the same lock mechanism as the Manix 2, just in a Taiwan model? How is it?

The Manix 2 is a great value. I'd watch the exchange for a G-10 version. You won't be disappointed. The Sage 3 doesn't have the Ball Cage Lock. It's more like the axis IIRC. The Sage series is great as well but not as beefy as the Manix, but still plenty capable.

The dark blue FRN S110V Manix 2 does not have steel liners. I have never handled the clear FRN models before but I would imagine the construction of the dark blue FRN knife and those knives are very similar if not the same.

I own the S110V version and the G10 versions and I can say that the S110V model is a great knife and a great buy. I would highly recommend it for an EDC knife. I have been carrying mine pretty much since I received it in the mail.

Just picked up a LW S110V to go with my XL S90V. I would advise you strongly to try the S110V. It's a home run...
Cheers

The S110V does not have steel liners, just FRN. The FRN is pretty sturdy, obviously not as strong as the G-10/steel version, but the sturdiness of the FRN actually surprised me. What you lose in strength of the liners and G-10, you more than make up for on weight in my opinion. The FRN version officially weighs in at 2.9 oz.(2.85 oz. on my scale)vs. the G-10 version at 5 oz.(5.18 oz. on my scale). Not to mention, the upgraded steel is a pretty nice benefit to the Lightweight Manix as well.

I have the G10 S30V Manix 2 as well as the Translucent Blue BD1 Lightweight. While the LW is good for summer carry, the G10 Manix 2 is outstanding. It's heavier, but in a good way. Just a solid knife all around. If I had to choose one it would definitely be the G10 version.

I agree with the others, the S110v model is great value for money, and the light weight makes it effortless to carry.

But if you are really keen on liners and G10, try to get one of the sprints. Unlike the production versions, the sprints all come with skeletonized liners and FFG blades, which bring the weight down to a reasonable amount, similar to the PM2.

I would try one of each...and I did. I like both and other than shape, they feel like completely different knives. I would start with the Dark Blue S110V. You may not even try the G10 version if it fills your needs.

The G10 versions shows up a lot on the exchange for a decent price and you can come across them at some of the sponsor sites.

The Sage 3 isn't as large but is a great option. I sell or trade away a lot of my knives but the Sage 3 carbon and Manix S110v are keepers.

Im one of those weirdos who prefer a slightly heavier knife, so for me the G-10 was a no brainer. I am truly blown away by the quality and feel of this knife. Its a little hefty compared to FRN models, but feels perfectly balanced. The ergos are the best on any knife I have ever owned and the G-10 is grippy as hell. And not to mention the sturdiness and feel of solid raw strength. Man what a knife!

I own a G10 Manix 2 and a LW BD1....I never carry the G10, but carry the LW all the time. I just like it better and will be selling the G10 and buying a S110V LW.

BTW, I dig the FRCP of the BD1 and wish they used it on the S110V also.

I'm glad you like the FRCP! Goes to show that we all have different tastes and it is a very good thing that Spyderco makes a wide variety of knives!
I personally do not like the FRCP as it feels a lot slipperier than the FRN knives I own. I would like to handle the S110V LW sometime, which uses the FRN to compare the differences. Maybe it is all in my head?

I am enjoying my Sprint Run Cruwear version. Very nice!!
Same. I haven't hard used this knife so far, but I'm really digging it.

I'll be picking up the S110v Manix next. The LW one in BD1 is an outstanding knife for the money in my opinion.

That's a sexy Manix in all black, maybe my favorite.

I would go with a sage 3. Alot smoother in my experience then a manix or any axis lock ive ever used. But if you really want a manix get the lightweight. They dont feel cheap to me at all. Its an awsome lightweight very durable knife.

I did order a Sage 3, to complete my Sage 1-4 lineup.

But the idea was to increase the USA-made side of my collection. So I'm still on the fence about the Manix. Leaning towards the model that oxman posted above, or the blue FRN/S110V version.

Good choice. Youll like it. I just got a s110v manix yesterday off here and i love it, another awsome knife by spyderco.

To the people who complain about the FRN and it's relative lack of strength; who are all these people you know who are crushing their folding knives with their incredible grip strength??
