MANIX 2 XL Bladeplay Problem?

Hey everyone, I have a couple of MANIX 2 XL knives. I had originally bought, carried, used and abused a satin manix XL for over a year as my primary EDC blade. Well I liked it so much that I decided to get a DLC coated XL to carry outside of work. I got the knife, and almost immediately just from playing with it it developed some pretty noticeable side to side play. My satin after a year of hard use is still as rock solid in every direction as possible, so needless to say the DLC developing play brand new out of the box was extremely disheartening. So I read about the lock, and decided the best course of action was to ship it back. After an extremely long wait I got my knife back, opened it up, and all seemed good, though perhaps a little tight.

Sure enough about 3 hours after starting to carry it and playing with it, and still not having used it to cut anything at all, the blade has play. The play is more extreme now then it ever was. I think that they just cranked the pivot screw really tight and shipped it back.

My question is can I do anything about this? I dont want to even carry it like this, even though Im sure its not an issue for general edc tasks. For the price point of the knife I expect solid lock up ESP considering I have my other heavily used manix xl in satin which I couldnt get to move a hair even if I wanted.

When you say that you shipped it back, do you mean that you returned it to the dealer or that you sent it to Spyderco for evaluation?

Sounds like the pivot is loosening up. Easy fix. Get the proper screwdriver (torx I believe but not sure which one) and some blue Loctite. On knives with locks like this (compression, axis, and the caged ball) they will usually have a sweet spot where the blade can swing smooth and there is no play. Sometimes its just a very small degree of a turn between perfect and blade play. Once you find it, put a little of the Loctite in the pivot, get it to the sweet spot and let it cure. The blue one is perfect because the screw will stay stationary until you want to take it back apart. Don't use the stronger Loctites as it will take heat to defeat it whereas the blue you just need the screwdriver.

Hope this helps.

Yes I sent the knife back to spyderco for evaluation and they sent the same knife back tightened. I have tried adjusting the pivot benchwarmer, I should have included that in my OP. The pivot is as tight as it can be.

I sold my Manix XL worked on 3 and my wife has a Manix Light weight.
I was able to adjust all of these to function perfect with no blade play.
Are you saying that there is horizontal blade play only. None of these had any vertical play.
If it is just side to side use some loc tite to hold it in place.
Although there is a bushing style system. As long as you have a screw driver with the torx bit you can really crank down on the screws on both sides. And it will tighten onto the washers a bit extra and eliminate any play.
Let me know if that made sense to you.
Matt
