Spyderco,
If you make this happen, I'll give you ALL of my money. I know people are interested in LC200N as I am and, having used it for some time on my Caribbean, Native 5 salt, Autonomy 2 and Spydiechef, I can truly say it's become my favorite steel. As a sweaty guy with a physical job, LC200N is necessary in the pocket, and I think the Manix XL is a master class in ergonomics alongside the Dodo (for anyone reading this: if you haven't handled the Dodo, you are doing yourself a serious disservice). Please consider.

I’m not sure a caged ball lock is well suited to a salt model.

Why not just push for the Caribbean XL that was mooted a while back, and leave the Manix XL for a super tough high alloy steel.

I'm not sure either, but that's also not something for me to decide. This is definitely more of a pipe dream than something that will come to fruition, but a boy can dream. As for the Caribbean XL, the Caribbean is already pretty big and fits my XL hands nicely. I'm not sure an oversized version would be necessary. I dunno. If it gets released, I certainly wouldn't feel the need to buy.

I'd love one in the standard Manix 2. LC200N is very tough too, exceeding a ton of non-stainless steels in that department.

I feel like the XL was an subspecies, afterthought to the standard Manix (I could be wrong). So if ever the Manix does go LC200N, it probably will be the standard Manix that gets it, at least initially. But here's hoping for the Manix and Manix XL LC200N models.

The XL is actually far closer to the form of the original Manix - just a thinner blade stock and the back lock replaced with the caged ball lock.

Yeah, I meant more that it's the same idea, just slightly different. But because it's already an altered version, it may not get the same attention with sprints and exclusives (such as LC200N steel) as the standard Manix.

It is a less popular model overall, and that is why it doesn't get the attention the regular Manix 2, PM2, etc get. Most people don't buy and use knives the size of the Manix 2 XL or Military.

I get that. I personally just wish that it was more popular. Nothing fits in my hand like the Manix xl, except for maybe the Caribbean.

Unfortunately the vast majority of the general populace looks at a Swiss army knife as a dangerous weapon. Lol

Man, ain't that the truth! State sanctioned things such as "knife control" don't help either. I can't believe in 2020, there are still places where you can't carry a locking knife. But, I suppose that's a topic for a different thread.

I don’t think it would be too hard to put a ceramic ball in the cage instead of the steel one. Or you could possibly use an lc200n ball.. it was developed as a ball bearing steel so they must exist, although they probably aren’t commonly available.

Hopefully available enough. Let's make it happen!

Several Spyderco ball lock models already use a ceramic ball. I was thinking more about the spring and the general ease of rinsing it out.

They used a ceramic ball on the marlin spike side of the tusk, which is (was?) part of the salt series. It was just the large ball, not caged—but it would still have a spring. I agree with you that a caged ball would be pretty hard to rinse out though. I was thinking more about corrosion.

Hey, I wouldn't mind a Manix 2 XL in Bright YELLOW...... Big and Easily found when dropped.

I'm thinking more along the lines of CPM-10v/AISI A11... with micarta scales
(pretty much anything would be better than the peel ply cf they used on the s90v 2XL - horrid stuff)

I can't get a solid feel for how that peel ply really is. It seems half the people who have it hate it, and the other half can't praise it enough. With that said, I absolutely agree with the micarta. Anything with micarta is good in my book

I think the problem is that people get mistaken about what the peel ply is.

Spyderco sells some carbon fiber scales that are a cf/g10 laminate. While the outside looks good, it’s not really anyone’s favorite because it’s not REAL carbon fiber. Kinda seems like a cheap alternative.

Peel ply cf is just a solid hunk of carbon fiber with the g10 type texture on the outside. But from what I’ve seen on here, people read the description of the peel ply cf and think they’re getting the g10/cf laminate.

I can’t think of any reason people would be against the peel ply cf, unless they don’t like the way carbon fiber looks.

...Anything with micarta is good in my book

I think many of us feel this way.
