I bought a Manix C95 today, but just barely. The store had 4 of the plain edge knives on display. The boxes were marked with various, alphabetized dates. I immediately noticed when I opened the Manix that I wanted it. It felt substantial and sturdy. The thickness of the blade was surprising. I couldn’t help but think what a great knife for making peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. :D I gripped the open knife as hard as I could and couldn’t imagine the possibility of it accidentally closing on me, if it did, it would take my fingers off because it was razor sharp. I also love the way it “snaps” open, and the way the rear serrations on the blade spine “lock in”. But as I looked at it closer, I noticed that there was an arch shaped scrape on the tang mark of the knife (the scrape went nearly through the "CPMS30V"), the other side was fine. I couldn't feel any scraping when I opened or closed it, but the gouge was noticeable. Put that knife down. Picked up the second knife, and noticed that both sides of the blade edge were not uniform, and the edge at the choil was wider than at the tip. When I compared the other Manix edges, this one was different. Put that knife down. Bought the third knife, drove 10 miles, while I was opening and closing it with one hand, all of a sudden..... Ouch! I caught my thumb on the open cut behind the backlock button. The sharpness of the gap could be felt with the knife opened or closed. The metal was shaven too deep on one side and the gap wasn't rectangular. Drove back 10 miles, picked up the last Manix they had and this one seems fine. I have had it for a few hours and I can’t find the slightest flaw.

I know there will be slight irregularities in most knives, I have enough to know, but a knife of this price, I expected better. By the way, all the Manix knives had 4 clip positions.

Congrats on the new Spyderco razcob. Is the Manix the only new goodie you picked up?

Yes, it was the only knife I bought this time. I liked the carbon fiber Military. Like the Manix, it has a nice tacky grip, great for wet hands. IMO, the Military could use a thicker liner lock release.

could have just been a hurried batch of knives

I am not sure the date of my knife, because we played musical boxes during the exchange. The box I have is BG. There was three different dates on the four boxes, so they weren't all made at the same time.

The Manix I bought last year by mail order had that same scrape arc. :(

But I still love it!

Stay sharp,

By sending your knife back to Spyderco, perhaps they could figure the cause of this defect and prevent it from happening in the future. I would like to know how, or if, Spyderco checks these knives before they are sent out. I can't imagine an experienced worker, with a trained eye for detail could miss these defects.
