Manix construction question (other spydies too)

Does anyone know what the Manix uses as a washer in the pivot? Is the pivot easily adjustable?

This is one of the first Spyderco knives that really has my attention - but I love the fact that i can dissasemble my benchmades and they use all metal contruction at the pviot (PB washers). call me crazy - but i will no longer buy a knife that uses nylon washers - or I end up refitting it with PB washers myself.

Any spydercos using PB yet or are they all nylon?

thanks!

I had the chance to handle one of these yesterday. It's a brute of a knife. I think I might have to pick one up. :)

Another big " High Five" for Eric Glesser. With the Manix and the Dodo he has definitely hit the ball out of the park twice. This guy is going to have some major league stuff blossoming down the road. I personally think the Dodo is the best all around, practical EDC I have ever used. I can't wait to put the Manix to the test. Spyderco is going to be in Great hands for years to come. :)

I have to say that I am very impressed with the creative mind of Eric Glesser. This guy is a genius when it comes to designing Spydercos knives. They have definitely caught my attention.....again. After my Dodo purchase and my love for that knife a Manix should be in my pocket no later than Tuesday of this coming week. if it is anything like the Dodo contruction wise I am going to be a happy man. :D

Yo Ken! It's a BIG, SOLID, folder. It makes the Dodo feel like a doo-doo. :)

Nylon. Very small, very thin (see through).

I just bought a manix, (my first spyderco) and I was wondering the same thing. Thanks for the info!

What does "PB" mean?

Peanut Butter washers, it's the newest trend, (Chris Reeve is supplied by Jiffy so I hear).

Com'on folks, that one has been hanging out there for days.

This is a new thing for me to care about regarding knife construction, adding to the list of items like blade play, type of lock, whether it can be disassembled, does it have that hated recurve, etc. "sigh" indeed. Now I'm going to be aware of this whereas I never used to concern myself with it before.

Sting, I'm curious, are you saying that this puts the knife outside the realm of you desiring one? Or can you retrofit it with the kind of washer that you would want?

I've found, paradoxically, that the uber-thin Spyderco washers not only hold up with reasonably "hard use" (i.e. sand, grit, crap) , but because they are so thin, they reduce horizontal blade play...

i guess its just like torx screws used to be. nice to have but some knives still used phillips or allen head. torx ARE better IMO. there is no down side and all it takes is one stripped soft metal phillips screw to convince me.

When I look at a 705 - the G10, the thick stainless liners, PB washers, and perfectly centered blade that has 0 blade play sums up the BM experience. Its a little tank. i can take it comeltely apart in seconds and there is nothing in there that is going to appreciably wear.

I had a LUM chinese folder (loved the design)- but as soon as I dissasembled it to clean and lubricate it - I knew I wouldnt keep it. those uber-thin washers do deform and when grit does get in there - they dont hold up as well. I had a Calypso - but the FRN seems flimsy. My favorute spyderco that I still own is a SS cricket - just because its small enough that I don't worry about it. Who else was dissapointed with their Carbon Fiber Delica with Phillips head screws and chipped CF scales?

I guess I dont see why Spyderco wouldnt use PB washers on a knife like the Manix or Para or similar "overbuilt" folders. Even the Kershaw Baby Boa I picked up on a whim has them.

If you have a chance - hold a Manix next to a 520a sometime. Or ask CRK why they use all metal construction on the Sebenza. Just like Spyderco went with G10 on their heavier duty folders - I think that the other little details like hardware construction/quality will hopefully be next.

To answer the other question - I have made dozens of PB washers myself for various knives(I retrofitted an older benchmade 450 BC1 last night) - but its just nicer when you don't have to do it and the Spyderco washers are so thin that its almost impossible to make a washer that doesnt interfere with the fit of the blade.

Maybe they should make the Manix HD (Heavy Duty) with PB washers, and larger screws for the belt clip, etc. :)

i dont know if you are being serious or not...

look at it this way - a few years ago vg10 was good enough for spydie fans - but who wouldnt want s30v instead?

frn or g10?

nylon or PB?

phillips or Torx?

when they get the whole package I'll be buying lots of spyderco knives :)

Mmh, I fail to see, why PB washers would add functionality? I also never had a Spyderco washer deform on me. From a pure consideration of stresses involved, a thicker washer can only decrease the strength of the pivot, no matter what the washer is made of. The strongest knife will always be one without any washer and the Spyderco washer gets pretty close to that ideal. I will admit that I haven't been always happy with the QC of Spyderco especially as far as bladeplay is concerned, but that had never anything to do with the washer, most of the time this was a matter of the relative tention of the pivot screw and the screw closest to the pivot. I am pretty sure that that problem will also get worse if you increase the thickness of the washer.

who said thicker? just a different material. pb washers are self lubricating and stronger and wont deform. i have had nylon washers deform.
