Is the ball bearing stainless (440c perhaps) and does it wear and ever need replacing? Just curious....

Love the knive and everything about it.

I dont know what steel it is but it does take long to wear. I have never heard bout any cage ball needing replacement.

I don't know what it is either but the lock is designed to adjust itself as parts wear. I EDC a d'allara for many years and the ball still looks brand new. You gotta consider a ball bearing is designed for much tougher things than a lock on a knife.

I remeber hearing some guy saying that he has a D'allara with a ceramic ball bearing. I think he was full of crap but that would be sweet.

If he does, it has been customized. The original balls are steel. Frankly, I'd trust a steel ball more than a ceramic one.

I can't quite see if the ball is spinning or rolling inside it's plastic cage. Can anyone tell if its actually spinning?

I have not held a new Cage lock (not available in SA at my favourite store) But if it is based on the D'allara I dont think it moves. Might be wrong though. Only held a D'allara years ago for a few minutes.

Yes, it would have to have been customized. IIRC, Sal has posted that Eric has customized some of his personal ball lock knives by replacing the steel ball with a ceramic ones. When I attended the NYCKS in 2004 someone working the Spyderco booth had a Dodo with a ceramic ball they were showing around. Believe it was either Eric, or the gent with the rather impressive moustache whose name I can't recall who use to work that show with them.
